UCFL Talks: Planetary Rerverberations 27. Mai 2025 | 18:30 Uhr - 20:00 Uhr

Evening lecture by Naomi C. Hanakata – researcher and urban planner, Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore and member of the International Advisory Board of the UCFL – Urban Climate Future Lab.

How is renewable energy production reconfiguring territorial relations in Southeast Asia?
Using Singapore as a vantage point, Naomi C. Hanakata explores how diverse urban sites are increasingly entangled through flows of labour and materials—and more specifically, electricity, capital, infrastructure, and expertise. These interdependencies challenge conventional binaries like urban/rural, producer/consumer, and Global North/South, revealing how sustainability transitions are reshaping both concentrated and extended forms of urbanisation. Grounded in spatial planning and critical urban studies, the talk reflects on the uneven geographies of decarbonisation and the spatial and political implications of transition in the context of planetary urbanisation.

Naomi C. Hanakata is Assistant Professor for Urban Planning at the College of Design and Engineering at the National University of Singapore, and Co-Founder of a research and planning practice in Singapore. Her work investigates the drivers and dynamics of contemporary urbanisation and socio-technical transition processes, including platformisation and energy transitions. Educated at ETH Zurich, Tokyo University, and the LSE, she holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich and has practiced in Zurich, Tokyo, New York, and Singapore. She has taught at Rice University and ETH Zurich and is currently Senior Fellow at the Swiss Institute of Advanced Studies and Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich.

This lecture is part of the UCFL TALKS series and is co-hosted by UCFL and Architekturpositionen. The collaboration with Naomi Hanakata is part of SpACE Lab at ISU – Institute for Sustainable Urbanism ongoing international activities within the research presence TU BS Singapore.
