Annual Review 2021 in Pictures These were the highlights at the TU Braunschweig
Attention. We are ready for take-off! The 2021 Annual Review starts with the CHYLA project, in which TU Braunschweig is helping to advance the electrification of commercial aircraft through its research. Please move your desk chair to an upright position and click on the arrow to the right to find out what other highlights of 2021 our university has in store. Picture credit: Chair of Aircraft Conceptual Design, TU Braunschweig/Stanislav Karpuk February's review begins with news we've all been eagerly awaiting: The renovation of the Audimax is finished! Since then, the listed auditorium building once again shines in its old glory - because it has remained visually true to itself after the renovation, which was carried out in accordance with the preservation order. Picture credit: Krekeler Architects Quantum Valley Lower Saxony also launched in February. Since then, representatives from science, industry and politics have been pulling together to implement scalable quantum computing in Lower Saxony. Picture credit: Christian Ospelkaus Four new nationwide battery research competence clusters are working on the integrated optimization of batteries. And all with TU participation. This involves every step in the life cycle of a battery, from production to use to recycling. Picture credit: Marisol Glasserman/TU Braunschweig March offers special cause for celebration: The Senate and the University Council of the TU Braunschweig unanimously decide in favor of Prof. Angela Ittel as the new President of the University. Congratulations! Picture credit: Sascha Gramann/TU Braunschweig Prof. Angela Ittel succeeds Prof. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla and Prof. Katja Koch, who previously served as acting president, in the office of president. "My goal is to create momentum that will further strengthen the university and make it shine on a regional, national and global level," she explains. Picture credit: Sascha Gramann/TU Braunschweig How can the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks in hospitals or care facilities be minimized? This question is being investigated jointly by scientists from the TU Braunschweig and the Charité Berlin. The TU Institute for Structural Design, Industrial and Healthcare Construction (IKE) is in charge. Picture credit: Steven Hahnemann/TU Braunschweig "Leere Herzen" ("Empty Hearts") is the novel by author Juli Zeh, with which the TU Braunschweig made it into the top ten of the "Eine Uni - ein Buch" ("One University - One Book") competition in April. Picture credit: Kristina Rottig/TU Braunschweig Houses from the 3D printer. Sounds impossible? It isn't! The first prototypes already exist. The TU Braunschweig and the TU Munich are conducting research on this in the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio "Additive Manufacturing in Civil Engineering". Picture credit: iBMB/TU Braunschweig As was January, May is another month of high altitude. This month, TU Braunschweig's new research aircraft will take off from Braunschweig Airport for the first time to collect measurement data. Picture credit: Rolf Hankers/TU Braunschweig To ensure students can complete their labs during online semesters, teachers have developed new solutions and formats. The Zoological Institute was particularly creative. They created the video format "Anatomy Insights". Prof. Karl-Heinz Glaßmeier is internationally renowned as an expert in space physics. In honor of his life's work, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is naming an asteroid after him. Picture credit: JPL/NASA The digital TU-Night(s) take us on a journey of discovery to various "Lost Places" of the university. The diverse program of videos, Future Talks, digital experience spaces and musical as well as cultural accentuation is still open for a visit. With various projects, workshops and events, the student employees of the "Green Office", newly founded in June, want to promote holistic sustainability at the TU Braunschweig. The focus is on ecological as well as economic and social aspects. Picture credit: Markus Hörster/TU Braunschweig As every year at the beginning of the Sommerlochfestival, the rainbow banner was hoisted on the University Square. Our president Prof. Angela Ittel as well as student representatives and the Diversity Office set a sign for diversity, acceptance and openness. Picture credit: Max Fuhrmann/TU Braunschweig The flag now flies permanently on University Square. Prof. Angela Ittel: "Acceptance, diversity, anti-discrimination and openness are particularly important topics for me, from which we can all benefit! Both here at the university and in society in general, these are very essential values that make us strong and special!" Picture credit: Max Fuhrmann/TU Braunschweig A space of possibility is being created - with the Reallabor, students and staff are turning Hagenmarkt in Braunschweig's city center into an "experimental site" for sustainability. Picture credit: Max Fuhrmann/TU Braunschweig The SynCoPark project could put an end to the tiresome search for a parking space. In the parking garage at the airport, vehicles are already autonomously searching for their parking space in a test zone. Picture credit: Isabell Massel/NFF Four members of the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics went to the Austrian Alps. They braved wind and weather and used a variety of measuring methods to investigate the structure and composition of glaciers. Picture credit: Robin Zywczok/TU Braunschweig The Altgebäude shone - For the ceremonial inauguration of the new TU President Prof. Angela Ittel, the entire university showed its Sunday best. Picture credit: Max Fuhrmann/TU Braunschweig Representatives of the state, the city and the university, above all Lower Saxony's Minister for Science and Culture, Björn Thümler, warmly welcomed the president to her new office. Picture credit: Kristina Rottig/TU Braunschweig The heart of quantum and nanotechnology beats in Lower Saxony! In September, the previous research results of Quantum Valley Lower Saxony were presented. Then, in 2025, the first quantum computer is to be unveiled. Picture credit: QVLS In the new Center of Fire Safety Research (ZeBra), scientists are investigating the burning properties of a wide range of building materials. The research building, which is unique in Europe and is expected to be completed in 2022, will enable further investigation of the fire behavior of established but also innovative construction methods. Picture credit: IBMB/TU Braunschweig For the fifth time, TU Braunschweig received the Total E-Quality award for equal opportunities and diversity, and this year also received the special sustainability award. Picture credit: Kristina Rottig/TU Braunschweig After 35 years in the service of research, the aged TU research aircraft D-IBUF went into well-earned retirement. Pilot Rudolf Hankers transferred it to the German Museum in Munich with a final flight. Picture credit: Markus Hörster/TU Braunschweig The winter semester brought life back to the campus. With 3G rules and a digital admission system, students were able to experience some of the courses in person again after three online semesters. Picture credit: Regina Eckhoff/TU Braunschweig "Agile 50 - The World's 50 Most Influential People Navigating Disruption" - Apolitical and the Global Future Council on Agile Governance of the World Economic Forum included Anne Paschke, Professor of Public Law and Technology Law, as the only representative from Germany in this list for her commitment to the public sector. Picture credit: Max Fuhrmann/TU Braunschweig After the flood disaster in the Eifel, architecture students support the reconstruction. Led by David Moritz, they recorded damage to a damaged half-timbered house and began planning further repairs. Picture credit: David Moritz/TU Braunschweig Individualized medicine is an essential building block for the healthcare system of the future. The Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering is researching how to safely combine different drugs to effectively adjust doses of active ingredients and control release behavior. Picture credit: Jan Henrik Finke/TU Braunschweig Once around the world - 224 TU cyclists covered almost 40,000 kilometers in the fifth Braunschweig city cycling event. They won the category "team with the most total kilometers". Picture credit: Kristina Rottig/TU Braunschweig Encouraging creativity in the natural sciences is what Dr. Luzie Semmler, Department of Chemistry and Didactics of Chemistry, has set out to do. The Escape Room offers students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a playful way in the "Crime Scene Chemistry Lab."
