“Mobility Days”: Autonomous driving in the public spotlight New conference and event format developed with the city and research institutions
With a scientific conference and a day of action in the city centre at the beginning of June, research institutions and the city administration want to bring Braunschweig’s research and innovations in the field of autonomous and connected driving more into the public eye, provide information about results and perspectives, and open up a dialogue with experts and the public. The new format “Braunschweig Mobility Days – Autonom und Digital” was conceived and planned by the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) of Technische Universität Braunschweig (TU), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) together with the Department of Culture and Science of the City of Braunschweig. Registration for the conference is now open.
The first event will be the scientific conference “Vernetzte und automatisierte Mobilität im Kontext der Stadt- und Verkehrsplanung” (Networked and Automated Mobility in the Context of Urban and Transport Planning) on Friday, 2 June. Registrations, which are subject to a fee, are possible until the end of May. The event is aimed at urban and transport planners in municipal administrations, researchers and experts from the mobility industry.
One focus will be on the effects of autonomous driving on traffic and urban planning. With expert lectures, practical workshops, inspiring panel discussions and the opportunity to take part in autonomous drives, participants will be able to gain a comprehensive insight and overview of this exciting and challenging field of the future.
The event will be rounded off and complemented by a reception hosted by the city on the evening before, Thursday, 1 June, which will provide an opportunity for networking for the registered conference participants.
Under the motto “Braunschweig drives autonomously: Information – Inspiration – Interaction”, a “Public Day” will then be held on Saturday, 3 June, as a family day on Schlossplatz in Braunschweig with numerous demonstrations, interactive activities and presentations on all aspects of autonomous driving. The stage programme will be organised in cooperation with the HEX Festival. For those interested, tours with self-driving vehicles will be offered on a route through the city centre. Details about the programme will be communicated in the coming weeks.
Statements by the cooperation partners on the new format
Mayor Dr Thorsten Kornblum: “The aim is, together with the relevant Braunschweig research institutions, to flank this important field of research with a scientific congress on the topic of “Automated Driving” and to make the research results accessible to the general public on a “Public Day”.”
TU President Prof. Angela Ittel: “Together with our partner institutions, we are putting Braunschweig on the world map of mobility innovations. At TU Braunschweig, we are proud to be at the national and international forefront of mobility research. We also attach great importance to being in continuous exchange with the community and industry on our research topics. The Mobility Days offer our NFF a great opportunity to do so.”
Prof. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chairwoman of the DLR Executive Board: ” For the first time, the symposium will focus on the increasingly relevant topic of autonomous driving. The focus will be on the effects on urban development and traffic planning aspects.
PTB President Prof. Cornelia Denz: “With the Public Day, we are creating the opportunity to enter into an exchange with all those in the region who are interested in autonomous mobility and thus to strengthen confidence in this new technology. This is the basis for highly automated vehicles to unfold their social potential in the future”.
