► Braunschweig’s aviation expertise showcased at the Parliamentary Evening in Berlin

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Interior Minister Daniela Behrens highlighted the current significance of aviation in security policy. The City of Braunschweig, TU Braunschweig, DLR and Aerodata AG presented Research Airport Braunschweig as an innovation cluster. The focus was on sustainable aviation, drones and the protection of critical infrastructure.

► International research collaboration with Taiwan strengthened

Together with Fraunhofer IST, TU Braunschweig is expanding its partnership with Feng Chia University in Taiwan. The collaboration focuses on semiconductor technology, surface research and sustainable production technologies. Plans include joint research projects, exchange programmes and new laboratory facilities for students and researchers.

► Space research beneath the ice

The Institute of Flight Control tested an autonomous underwater vehicle in northern Sweden. The field test is part of the TRIPLE project and is preparing for a major Antarctic mission at the end of 2026. The aim is to develop all the necessary technologies for the exploration of icy moons.

► New Climate.Future Lab

AgRe-Lab marks the launch of the sixth Climate.Future Lab within the network of the Lower Saxony Centre for Climate Research. The research consortium is developing strategies for climate-resilient agricultural landscapes. Prof. Kai Schröter from the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, Department of Hydrology and River Basin Management, is also involved.

► How trees sequester mercury

Researchers at the Institute of Geoecology are investigating how tropical forests influence the global mercury cycle. In the video, Dr Marta Pérez-Rodríguez, Dr Juan F. Morales Arteaga and Prof. Harald Biester provide insights into the international project. They recount their personal experiences of fieldwork in Costa Rica in a further video.

► Successful technology transfer honoured

TU Braunschweig and CompositeEdge GmbH have been honoured with the 2026 Technology Transfer Award from the Braunschweig Chamber of Industry and Commerce: The award was given to the “EdgeAdapt” project – an ultra-thin, recyclable sound panel for sustainable noise protection. The technology absorbs over 95 per cent of noise below 1000 Hz and is already ready for series production.

► New Head of Fraunhofer WKI

Since 15 May, Prof. Raoul Klingner has been Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research WKI in Braunschweig. At the same time, he has taken up the Professorship of Organic Building Materials and Wood-Based Materials at TU Braunschweig. A warm welcome to him!

► Prof. Arno Kwade honoured at World Congress in Japan

Prof. Arno Kwade from the Institute of Particle Technology received the prestigious KONA Award at the World Congress on Particle Technology in Osaka. The award recognised his pioneering contributions to particle technology – particularly in the fields of battery recycling and pharmaceutical process engineering. Congratulations!

► TUmorrow Days: Sustainability Action Days

The TUmorrow Days 2026 will bring sustainability to life at TU Braunschweig from 8 to 11 June – with training on climate-friendly procurement, a Sustainability Council, the TUmorrow Awards and the Fairtrade Coffee Bike offering free coffee on the Campus.

► Strong start for multilingual education

TU Braunschweig and the Oskar Kämmer School aim to work more closely together and have now signed a Letter of Intent to this end. The Institute of German Studies and the Institute of English and American Studies will provide academic support for the establishment of the new bilingual primary school.

► TU Teaching Award 2026: Start of the nomination phase

This year marks the third time the TU Teaching Awards will be presented. All students can submit their nominations via Stud.IP until 28 June. Further information on the process here.

► Brave conversations at the Haus der Wissenschaft

On 29 May, the Haus der Wissenschaft is hosting a “Brave Conversation” on the question: “How can we help people become smarter in a world where the machines are becoming rapidly smarter?” The event provides a space to reflect, together with others, on the deep interconnection between people, our societies and the technologies we have created.

► Internal work shadowing: Thinking outside the box

Staff can gain insights into the work processes, roles and procedures of other departments at TU Braunschweig through internal work shadowing for a day. These enable staff members to look beyond their own horizons and network.

► Plant and book market in the Botanical Garden

Browse, discover and enjoy: on 31 May, the Friends of the Braunschweig Botanical Garden Association are once again hosting their popular social event. Anyone looking for rare plants, books, audio recordings and DVDs will find what they’re looking for in the extension area of the Botanical Garden. The proceeds will go towards the Botanical Garden.

► Open Day at TU Braunschweig Medicinal Plant Garden

Also on 31 May, the Medicinal Plant Garden invites visitors from 10 am to 6 pm to gain fascinating insights into the world of medicinal, poisonous and aromatic plants. Visitors can look forward to guided tours, a plant and seed exchange, gardening tips, as well as coffee and cake. Free entry.

► Registration for the Summer Camp during the school holidays

Research, tinker and discover: at TU Braunschweig’s “LauF – Lust auf Forschen” Summer Camp, children aged 10 to 14 become researchers / scientists themselves. From 4 to 7 August, exciting workshops on wild bees, AI, rocket building, 3D printing and much more await on the North Campus.

► Call for applications: Seed Funding Programme with Taiwan

Researchers and staff members at TU Braunschweig can submit an application to the Matching Funds Programme by 30 June. Funding is available for joint research teams and university staff members from both universities.

► New call for applications for the GeDiMINT Seed Funding 2027

As part of the GeDiMINT project, collaborations are being funded to investigate the relevance of gender dimensions in research fields related to engineering, life sciences and natural sciences. The multi-stage selection procedure begins with the submission of a profile by 15 June.

… is Till Hagemann, winner of the 2025 Teaching Award. What does good teaching mean to him? It’s not just about imparting knowledge, but about providing guidance. In the interview, he talks about why learning begins on an equal footing and why AI cannot replace genuine relationships in teaching.
