► WeCare
As previously reported: WeCare is our contact point for institutions and companies that are currently requesting support from the TU Braunschweig. At the same time, it promotes, networks and bundles the many decentralized offers of help and project ideas from the university. There are small aids and large ones, from self-sewn masks to the production of face shields in injection molding, from blood donations to app development, from sports tips to a children’s university for the home. There are so many projects that we have not even been able to process them online yet. Sandbox bundles the voluntary offers. In the case of institutional help, our administration provides support in word and deed and ensures the legal, personnel and budgetary aspects.
► News from the institutes
Work is continuing at the TU Braunschweig, but under very individual conditions. Dirk Wulferding from the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics has, together with colleagues, demonstrated a new quantum state. The research work was supported by the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence and the Metrology Research Focus of TU Braunschweig. “Nature Communications” is now reporting on this.
Andre Wegner, head of the “Pathometabolism” research group at the Institute of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, works at the interface between biology and computer science. In our series “inquired” we talked to him about his work and how the corona pandemic is affecting his research activities.
Rudong Yang from Tongji University (Shanghai) was looking forward to working in Braunschweig with colleagues from the Institute of Transportat, Railway Construction and Operation (IVE) on the international project EAST-Cities. Now he is researching together with them from his home office.
Traditional pumped storage power plants can temporarily store energy as needed. The ALPHEUS project, in which TU Braunschweig is also involved under the leadership of Professors Nils Goseberg and Bernd Engel, is now working on solutions so that areas in the lowlands can also benefit from this technology.
Does the crisis also present an opportunity? Professor Christian Leßmann talks about the economy and the corona crisis in our interview.
► History in pictures
The educational historian Professor Ulrike Pilarczyk receives the Research Prize of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE) “for outstanding research activities in the field of educational science”. A conversation about her research in the field of image science as well as her longstanding research on the history of the Jewish youth movement in Germany and in Palestine/Israel.
► “Best Practice”: Lower Saxony Technical School awarded
Club MINT, initiated by the Stifterverband, honored the Niedersachsen-Technikum as one of ten best practice programs. The TU Braunschweig was among them: 115 young women have taken part in the program at the Carolo-Wilhelmina over the past eight years. Innovative ideas for getting more women interested in studying STEM were awarded prizes. More about this in the note blog.
► Virtual final
Due to the corona pandemic, the final round of the InformatiCup 2020 this year took place as a video conference. A team from the TU Braunschweig was also among the four finalists and secured the second place, which was endowed with 2,000 euros. Congratulations!
