Aviation of the Future: Silent, Sustainable, Electric News from sustainable aviation research at NFL Research Day 2021

Also this year, the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL) will hold its NFL Research Day on Tuesday, 9 November 2021 from 9 am to 12 pm. The program is themed “New insights from the Cluster of Excellence SE²A” on sustainable aviation. Participation in the hybrid event is free of charge.

In addition to the awarding of the NFL prizes for the best research work and the best student work, three exciting lectures are on the agenda: Professor Sabine Langer will report on research into noise assessment and how acoustics-compatible design of future technologies in aviation can look. Dr. Camli Badrya will show how a new type of aerodynamics for wings can help to reduce fuel consumption and thus emissions. In the third contribution, Professor Georg Garnweitner will present new concepts for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries that meet the requirements of electrically or hybrid-electrically powered aviation. Following the three technical presentations, this year’s NFL Young Scientist Awards and the Hermann Blenk Research Award will be presented.

Hybrid event

This year, the Research Day will take place as a hybrid event. This means that this year it will be possible to participate in the Research Day both in person and digitally via Webex video conference. The face-to-face event will take place at the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF), Hermann-Blenk-Straße 42, 38108 Braunschweig, Germany. In order to participate on site, guests need to register for the attendance event in advance by e-mail (nfl@tu-braunschweig.de).

For digital participation, you can dial into the conference. The video conference will be activated approx. 15 minutes before the start of the event for dial-in: https://lnk.tu-bs.de/ZmneAa

Within the framework of the current Corona regulations, the 3G regulation applies for participation on site. Accordingly, please have a vaccination or recovery certificate or a negative test result (not older than 24 hours) ready for inspection at the entrance to the building and please observe the mask requirement inside the building.

About the Cluster of Excellence SE 2A

The Cluster of Excellence SE²A – Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Aviationis an interdisciplinary research center with the purpose of investigating technologies for a sustainable and eco-friendly air transport system. Scientists from aerospace, electrical, energy and chemical engineering are working on the reduction of emissions and noise, as well as recycling and life-cycle concepts for airframes and improvements in air traffic management. Technische Universität Braunschweig, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Leibniz University Hannover (LUH), the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) and the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) have joined forces in this extraordinary scientific untertaking.

About the NFL

The Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL) at TU Braunschweig is where scientists working in the field of aeronautics and space travel in Niedersachsen are organised. What drives them is sustainability in long-distance travel. The challenges here are energy supply, economic efficiency and safety. To this end, they jointly develop key technologies and communicate facts on the discourse in aerospace.
