Commitment to academic freedom and democracy TU Braunschweig supports the statement by the Berlin Research Network

As a founding member of the TU9 Alliance of leading universities of technology, and together with our regional and global partners, we are actively committed to academic freedom for the benefit of our society. We therefore wholeheartedly endorse the statement released by the Berlin Research Network, ‘Free Science – Successful Economy – Strong Germany’.

Academic freedom is indispensable for progress and an innovative society. We therefore view with concern the growing anti-science tendencies in our country. These tendencies not only threaten the independence of research and teaching, but also jeopardise the longterm viability of our economy and the stability of our democracy.

As a university, we are fully committed to academic freedom, as enshrined in the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. Science generates robust knowledge that forms the basis of evidence-based decisions in politics, business and society. It is only through free science that new technologies, processes and solutions can emerge: from AI applications and material innovations to breakthroughs in medical technology. Such innovations strengthen Germany’s competitiveness, secure jobs and thereby reinforce social cohesion.
