Urban Climate Future Lab inaugural Kick-off meeting

With a kick-off workshop at Technische Universität Braunschweig, the Urban Climate Future Lab (UCFL), a future lab at the Lower Saxony Center for Climate Research, has now begun its work.

The event at the SpACE Lab at the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism (ISU) brought together researchers from TU Braunschweig, Leuphana University Lüneburg, Leibniz University Hannover, the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS), and the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning in the Leibniz Association. The UCFL is a collaborative network that includes the disciplines of architecture, urban design and planning, landscape architecture, engineering, natural sciences, governance, social sciences, and climate sciences.

The workshop was marked by intense discussions and joint activities aimed at further shaping the research agenda of the UCFL and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration.

Speaker Prof. Dr. Vanessa Miriam Carlow stated: “With the UCFL, we want to investigate how the urban system in its elements, i.e. the types of settlement typically found in Lower Saxony, from large cities, medium-sized and small towns to municipalities and villages, contributes to climate change and is affected by it and what role landscape, mobility, production and governance play in climate adaptation.”

Led by Professor Vanessa Carlow, the Urban Climate Future Lab aims to explore the complex interconnections between urbanization, climate impacts, and climate change adaptation. The project is funded by the “zukunft.niedersachsen” program of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation.

Over the next six years, the UCFL will develop pathways for climate adaptation and a sustainable future focused on Lower Saxony by integrating interdisciplinary insights and methods from various fields.
