► Singapore to become a gateway to South-East Asia for Lower Saxony’s scientific community
The TU Braunschweig is expanding its research presence, TU Braunschweig Singapore Ltd. – established in 2023 – with funding from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. Within two years, a pilot model is to be developed that will open up access to South-East Asian networks for other universities in Lower Saxony.
► Aerospace research receives millions in funding
How can aviation emissions be reliably predicted and reduced? The Institute of Aircraft Propulsion and Flow Machinery and the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines are working on this using a practical simulation platform. The “Vlame” project is receiving 1.5 million euros for this from the VIP+ programme of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space.
► “3M-NANO” prize for doctoral student from the Institute of Microtechnology
Ebrahim TaiediNejad and his team took second place in the Graduate Award in Applied Nanoengineering at the 3M-NANO conference in China. They were recognised for their work on the scalable production of uniform lipid nanoparticles for clinical use. Congratulations!
► Groundbreaking initiative: Mental health first aiders
A course on Mental Health First Aid teaches students how to respond appropriately to mental health crises and support those affected. With this initiative, Prof. Julian Hegemann is setting an important example for greater mental health awareness and mutual support amongst pharmacy students.
► How can we save our trees during summer droughts?
Dr Matthias Beyer from the Institute of Geoecology at the TU Braunschweig and Prof. Jürgen Bauhus from the University of Freiburg explain what will help urban trees now and why a ‘water alliance’ is needed in an article by Deutsche Welle.
► Bettina Wahrig featured on the WDR podcast “Zeitzeichen”
In the latest episode of the history podcast, Bettina Wahrig, a retired professor of the history of Pharmacy and science, joins other guests to discuss “Frauengold”, a tonic and circulatory remedy banned in 1981.
► TU Braunschweig recruits talent at US job fair
From 21 to 23 August, our university will once again be represented at GAIN in San Francisco. Dr Stephan Steinke attended the Talent Fair 2024. At the time, he was still a postdoctoral researcher in the USA; today, he conducts research at the Institute of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. He explains how this came about in an interview in TU Magazine.
► New space management system at TU Braunschweig
Who uses which rooms at our university – and how? In future, the space management system aims to allocate the valuable resource of space in a way that is more tailored to needs, more efficient and more sustainable. Anyone interested can find out exactly how this works and what processes are involved here.
► Street art on display at Mensa 1
The Colour & Soul Festival brought a splash of colour to Braunschweig a few weeks ago. With the support of the Sandkasten platform, a mural was also created on our Campus: the artwork “Universe 25” by artist TASEK pays homage to the 1968 experiment of the same name by behavioural scientist John B. Calhoun. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled the next time you visit the canteen!
► New sports courses from the Workplace Health Promotion (BGF) programme
Want to do some sport during working hours? You can do just that this winter semester with the courses offered by the Workplace Health Promotion (BGF). Registrations open on 31 August at 10.00 via the Continuing Education Programme run by Central Staff Development.
► Learning Nugget #19: “Virtual Campus – an interactive alternative to video conferences”
Lecture halls, laboratories and more can be experienced digitally in freely navigable 2D spaces: on 27 August, Dr Stefan Böhme from the Media Lab will present practical scenarios using the open-source tool “WorkAdventure”. Register here.
► Next week at the Science Showcase with the Science & Art Lab
Together with TU researchers and artists from the Kunstverein Jahnstraße, anyone interested can create images on the theme of “Light” on 25 August. On 27 August, students Jan Haevescher (TU Braunschweig) and Paula Knust Rosales (HBK Braunschweig) will provide insights into their current projects and working methods in architecture and art. Find out more.
► F.A.Z. competition: The best research articles by researchers
Researchers at German institutions are invited to explain, in 9,000 to 11,000 characters, how their research will change the world. The five best submissions will be published in the F.A.Z. supplement “Natur und Wissenschaft”. Submissions are open until 31 October. Texts written by AI will be excluded from the competition.
► Horizon Europe: Funding opportunities for health research and more
A new brochure from the European network of “National Contact Points for Health” provides information on calls for tenders (CFTs) with deadlines between September and December. Researchers from all faculties are invited to explore suitable funding opportunities.
► Our darling of the week
When do AI language models actually help us in our day-to-day university life? And when do they tend to hold us back? Dr Christiaan Maasdorp is exploring these questions during his Emerging Tech Fellowship at the Institute for Information Systems and the Institute for Business Information Systems. Anyone interested should not miss his English-language talk on 27 August – registration is open until 23 August.
