On a site tour with the Minister for Science
As part of his summer tour of university construction projects in Lower Saxony, Lower Saxony’s Minister for Science, Falko Mohrs, visited the Technische Universität Braunschweig on 12 August 2026. The programme included two construction projects: the Centre for Circular Production of Next-Generation Batteries and Fuel Cells (CPC) at the Braunschweig Research Airport, and the new Chemistry building on the Main Campus.
These two construction sites exemplify the state’s investment in a high-performance scientific infrastructure. Whilst the CPC will in future facilitate top-level research into the circular production and recycling of batteries and fuel cells, the new Chemistry building will provide modern facilities for research, teaching and student study at the TU Braunschweig. Both buildings are scheduled for completion in 2027.
From 11 to 13 August 2026, the Minister will visit a total of 13 major construction sites at nine universities in Lower Saxony. On site, he will be briefed on the progress of the construction projects, speak with users who will be working in the new buildings in future, and discuss university infrastructure with staff members.
Battery research at the research airport
At the CPC, around 150 scientists / researchers will be conducting research into batteries, fuel cells and other energy storage systems. A key focus is on the recovery of critical raw materials and their processing into high-purity materials to enable closed-loop material cycles. The research building is being constructed at the Braunschweig Research Airport in the immediate vicinity of the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF), the Aeronautics Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFL), the Fraunhofer Centre for Energy Storage and Systems ZESS (under construction) and the experiment hall of the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig.

Chemistry: Replacement building for research and teaching on the Main Campus
The new chemistry building on Konstantin-Uhde-Straße will also be able to benefit from the expertise of its neighbours: the Braunschweig Centre for Systems Biology (BRICS), the Haus der Wissenschaft and the Biozentrum. It replaces the Chemistry building on Hans-Sommer-Straße, which was vacated in 2016, and brings the facilities – which have since been spread across several sites – back together in one place. The new building comprises lecture halls, seminar rooms, teaching and research laboratories, office and workshop spaces, as well as the Agnes-Pockels Laboratory for school pupils.
