Strong TU expertise in the Climate Council for Lower Saxony

On 24 February 2026, the Lower Saxony state government appointed the new Climate Council. Anchored in the Climate Act, this body will advise the state government on the implementation of climate protection measures in a scientifically sound, practical and socially balanced manner. Citizen participation also plays a central role in this process: A citizens’ council selected by lot will evaluate and supplement the recommendations of the Climate Council.

With Prof. Dr. Bernd Engel, Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems at the elenia Institute for High Voltage Technology and Energy Issues, and Prof. Elisabeth Endres, Professor of Building Technology, two proven TU experts are contributing their scientific expertise to the Climate Council. TU Braunschweig thus covers key future areas of the energy transition – from sustainable energy systems and grid infrastructure to climate-friendly buildings.

The Climate Council consists of a total of 15 members, including six scientists and nine representatives from associations. The recommendations developed jointly with the Citizens’ Council are published annually and submitted to the state parliament and state government. The aim is to make Lower Saxony’s path to climate neutrality by 2040 evidence-based, feasible and widely accepted by society.
