TU Braunschweig moves up to eighth place nationwide in terms of third-party funding Destatis analysis: University improves its position in the national rankings despite a decline in third-party income

  • TU Braunschweig rises from ninth to eighth place in terms of third-party income per professor
  • Once again among the top ten universities in Germany for third-party funding
  • Still the frontrunner in Lower Saxony
  • 566,010 euros of third-party income per professor

Less third-party funding, but a better position in the national rankings: Technische Universität Braunschweig has risen from ninth to eighth place in terms of third-party income per professor. This is shown by a recent analysis by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) for the year 2024. This means that TU Braunschweig is once again among the ten universities in Germany with the highest third-party income per professorship, whilst also remaining the leading university in Lower Saxony.

Nationwide, the average third-party income per university professorship fell by 2.1 per cent in 2024. At TU Braunschweig, too, the figure was below the previous year’s level. The fact that the university was nevertheless able to improve its position demonstrates its continued strength in the competition for research funding. In total, researchers at TU Braunschweig secured 124.1 million euros in third-party funding; this equates to 566,010 euros per professorship.

“Promoting top-level research is our priority. To this end, we are pursuing innovative approaches, and I am very proud of what our university and our researchers are achieving. They are the driving force behind our success and play a decisive role in enabling us, as TU Braunschweig, to further strengthen our position in a nationwide comparison. My heartfelt thanks go to them and to everyone who, with great dedication, is advancing our scientific impact,” says President of TU Braunschweig Angela Ittel.

Background

Third-party funding refers to funds applied for in addition to the university’s regular budget for research, junior researchers and teaching. The main sources of third-party funding for TU Braunschweig are the Federal Government, the German Research Foundation (DFG), industry and business, and the European Union.

The higher education finance statistics are published with a time lag. The analysis by the Federal Statistical Office, presented on 28 September 2026, relates to the year 2024. Medical institutions and health sciences are not taken into account when comparing universities.
