Kinder-Uni Braunschweig: Registration started Lecture "Warum haben Bäume Stress" (Why do trees have stress) with accompanying podcast series on ecology

Science-interested children between the ages of eight and twelve can now register for the children’s university lecture “Warum haben bäume Stress” on 16 November 2024 in the Main Lecture Hall of Technische Universität Braunschweig. Professor Robert Hänsch from the Institute of Plant Biology answers these questions: How do plants protect themselves? Why is it important for us humans to support the forest and what can we do to ensure that the forest will soon be better again? The children’s university lecture will be accompanied by the podcast series “Clever nachgefragt!” on the topic of ecology.

If the forest were a school class, more than three-quarters of the class would be ill. This is the current state of Germany’s forests. Only 20 percent of forest trees are still healthy. The main reason for this is climate change. The earth is now almost 1.5 degrees warmer than it was before factories, cars and planes. As a result of this rise in temperature, plants are increasingly suffering from drought stress. For fungi and insects, on the other hand, the higher temperatures are very good living conditions and they damage the forest. Professor Robert Hänsch from the Institute of Plant Biology gives children an exciting insight into the subject in the children’s university lecture “Warum haben Bäume Stress” (Why do trees have stress).

The children’s university lecture will take place on

16 November at 10:30 a.m., Main Lecture Hall,
Universitätsplatz 2, 38106 Braunschweig

Parents and accompanying persons can follow the lecture in an adjacent auditorium. Registration is now open online. The lecture is free of charge.

The accompanying podcast series “Clever nachgefragt!” on the topic of ecology will be published on the Kinder-Uni website in early November 2024.

The scientists involved are

  • Prof. Robert Hänsch, Institute of Plant Biology
  • Dr. Clemens Krautwald, Leichtweiß-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, Department of Hydromechanics, Coastal and Ocean Engineering
  • Prof. Andreas Haarstrick, Leichtweiß-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, Department of Waste and Resource Management
  • Prof. Arno Kwade, Institute for Particle Technology
  • Prof. Folke Köbberling, Institute for Architecture-Related Art
  • Prof. Stephan Weber, Institute of Geoecology

Background: Ecology as a key topic

As part of the Kinder-Uni, Technische Universität Braunschweig is once again cooperating with the schools department of the city of Braunschweig and, for the first time, with Rüningen primary and secondary school. The focus topic complements the sustainability projects initiated by the city of Braunschweig’s schools.

The podcast series “Clever nachgefragt!” with TU scientists is funded by the Ecki-Wohlgehagen-Stiftung and the Bürgerstiftung Braunschweig.
