Digital parking management launched From 1 May 2026, parking spaces at TU Braunschweig will be available exclusively to registered university members and guests

The parking situation at Technische Universität Braunschweig has been strained for some time: up to 70% of available spaces are occupied by external users and long-term parkers. At the same time, paid short-term parking zones around the campus have further increased parking pressure. To ensure that all members can once again travel to work stress-free, TU Braunschweig is introducing a digital parking scheme. The aim is to enable university members to use parking spaces reliably and in line with their needs. Following a successful trial phase, parking in the TU Braunschweig’s car parks will be subject to a charge from May onwards and will continue to be reserved exclusively for university members and guests.

The car parks at Technische Universität Braunschweig were made available to the university by the State of Lower Saxony on the condition that they be used exclusively for university purposes. Nevertheless, they are regularly occupied by external users – in some cases on a permanent basis. This means that university members often struggle to find a parking space near the campus. The introduction of short-stay parking zones around the central campus has further exacerbated the situation. To ensure a reliable, transparent and fair parking situation for its university members, TU Braunschweig has developed a digital parking management system in consultation with the representatives of all university members.

New rule: Parking only with registration

From 1 May 2026, TU Braunschweig’s parking spaces will be available exclusively to registered users and guests of the university. Registration takes place via an online portal and is only available to university members. On the online portal, university members and guests can purchase tickets and manage their vehicles. Parking enforcement is automated: cameras capture the number plates of vehicles entering and leaving the car parks and cross-check them against the stored data. Vehicles parked in the car parks without authorisation are reliably detected. In such cases, a penalty charge of 40 euros will be imposed.

Data protection-compliant number plate capture

Cameras are installed at all access points to the TU car parks, which capture number plates using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Data processing is carried out in accordance with high data protection standards. All data is pseudonymised and transmitted using end-to-end encryption. No driving or movement profiles are created, and the data is deleted immediately after the parking process is completed, provided there is no violation. In the event of a violation, a corresponding data record is created and stored in accordance with the legal requirements of the GDPR to enable follow-up.

Information for local residents

The parking management cameras exclusively record the access points to the university car parks. Public roads or private property are not subject to surveillance. The privacy of residents and passers-by is fully protected. The parking spaces are marked with appropriate signage informing users of the camera-based monitoring and the applicable parking regulations.

Please note the transition periods

The paid parking system will come into force on 1 May 2026. Vehicles without a parking permit must be removed from TU parking areas immediately.
