Together for climate change adaptation Kick-off forum "Co-Adapted Braunschweig"

Under the motto “Gemeinsam für Klimaanpassung” (Together for Climate Change Adaptation), the City of Braunschweig and Technische Universität Braunschweig invite all those interested to the kick-off forum of the “Co-Adapted Braunschweig” project on 21 September in the TRAFO Hub. Keynote speeches on climate change adaptation in municipalities and on climate change impacts in Braunschweig will lay the foundation for an interactive part of the event, in which ideas for adaptation measures to the consequences of climate change will be developed together in various thematic workshops. Participants: Professor Stephan Weber from the Institute of Geoecology at TU Braunschweig and Dr Beatrice John from the Zentrum KlimaAnpassung Berlin.

The Braunschweig Kick-off Forum is part of the Climate Change Adaptation Week from 18 to 22 September. Numerous events are taking place all over Germany, reflecting the great commitment and the manifold opportunities of climate adaptation in the municipalities. The urgency to develop effective, implementable measures for adapting to the consequences of climate change is also increasing in Braunschweig.  The heavy rainfall event of 22 June, which caused a great deal of damage, is a reminder that extreme weather events are becoming more intense and more frequent as climate change progresses. In order to cope with the cross-sectional task of climate change adaptation, sustainable networking at all levels and the integrated cooperation of many committed actors from science, administration and urban society are required.

The joint project Co-Adapted Braunschweig, initiated by the city administration and Technische Universität Braunschweig, aims to develop building blocks for an urban climate change adaptation strategy together with citizens and a wide range of participants. Against the background of increasingly hot days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, effective heat protection, for example, has become more important in recent years. Effective climate change adaptation, which among other things also contributes to health protection, requires the cooperation of numerous disciplines and local people.
