Dr. Stephan Krinke becomes Honorary Professor at TU Braunschweig Appreciation for teaching on environmental and sustainability management in companies

Dr. Stephan Krinke, Head of Sustainability Strategy and Decarbonisation at Volkswagen AG, was appointed Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Technische Universität Braunschweig on 16 September 2021. With this step, the faculty recognises his commitment as a lecturer for the lecture “Environmental and Sustainability Management in Industrial Application”.

“The course offered by Dr. Krinke provides a sound introduction to environmental and sustainability management in the day-to-day business of companies. The course expands the existing range of courses offered by the institute and the faculty in one of the central fields of action for prospective specialists and managers,” says the head of the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology, Professor Christoph Herrmann, with pleasure.

About the person

Prof. Stephan Krinke is Head of Sustainability Strategy and Decarbonisation in the area of Group Sustainability at Volkswagen AG. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the Group’s sustainability strategy and the Group’s decarbonisation programme.

Prof. Stephan Krinke studied Chemistry at the TU Stuttgart with distinction. For his doctorate, he moved to the Jülich Research Centre, where he conducted research on atmospheric chemistry and air pollution control in the field of environmental systems research. He began his professional career in 2000 at Volkswagen AG. There he initially worked as a specialist for life cycle assessment and vehicle recycling and was the first to develop a tool for the automated preparation of vehicle life cycle assessments.

At Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Krinke taught “Ökobilanzen und Umweltmanagement” (Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Management) from 2002 to 2010; at TU Berlin, Prof. Krinke has been giving guest lectures on environmental and sustainability management since 2015.

From 2010 to 2015, Prof. Krinke was Head of Environmental Product at Volkswagen AG and was responsible for life cycle engineering, raw material analyses and environmentally compatible product development. In 2016, Prof. Krinke was appointed Environmental Management Officer at Volkswagen AG. In this role, he was responsible for environmental protection for production, products and sustainable mobility. In 2018, Prof. Krinke was appointed to the General Secretariat as Head of Sustainability Strategy and Programmes.

Prof. Krinke represents German industry and science in numerous national and international committees.

He represents the industrial application side at the CIRP Life Cycle Engineering (LCE) conferences, e.g. at the LCE 2015 in Sydney. In 2011, he co-chaired the Life Cycle Management Conference (LCM) and has since been a member of the LCM Planning Committee.

Prof. Krinke is a board member of the BDI Environment, Technology and Sustainability Committee. In 2018, he was appointed by the government of Lower Saxony to the government commission on sustainable environmental policy and digital transformation.

He is also a member of the DIN Committee for Life Cycle Assessments and Product-Related Environmental Labelling, which he chaired from 2014 to 2020.
