► Asteroid Apophis passes Earth – ESA monitors the flyby

Only about once every 7,000 years does an asteroid pass so close to Earth as Apophis will on 13 April 2029. The ESA’s RAMSES mission is monitoring the flyby. The TU Braunschweig is contributing a magnetometer developed by the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics. The instrument will carry out geophysical measurements directly on the asteroid’s surface.

► Robert Strötgen to become the new Director of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library

Robert Strötgen has been Executive Director of our University Library since 2022. In this role, he has focused in particular on expanding research-related services and strategically developing the library. Now it is time for a new challenge: in August, Strötgen will become the Director of the Lower Saxony State Library. We wish him every success in his new role!

► Networking to kick-start your career

Students from the Institute of Communication Studies organised Connect38, an initiative that connects aspiring professionals in the media and communications sector with regional companies and institutions. The social event is the result of a project management seminar led by Prof. Monika Taddicken and Evelyn Jonas.

► Conference: Wolfgang Hilbig and Nature

In 2026, the Büchner Prize winner would have turned 85 – together with partners in Leipzig, Prof. Jan Röhnert is organising a literary-botanical colloquium on 1 and 2 September. Please complete registration with the Modern German Literature department of the Institute of German Studies.

► Call for proposals: Clean Energy Transition Partnership Joint Call 2026

The CETPartnership funds research consortia on the energy transition comprising at least three partners from three EU countries. On the German side, the partnership is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The first application deadline is 8 October. Support with the application process is available from the National Contact Point for Climate, Energy and Mobility and the Research Services.

… are the winners of Young Software Developers’ Day! The team from the Institute of Artificial Intelligence secured first place with an intelligent PDF search agent. In total, around 200 students of Computer Science, Business Information Systems and Information Systems Engineering presented their projects from this year’s software placement to a jury comprising academics, industry representatives and student representatives. Congratulations!
