Student House finalist for European Architecture Prize Only German entry among seven finalists
The Student House at Technische Universität Braunschweig is the only German entry among the seven finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture. This has been announced by the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. An international jury has selected the design of the Student House by architects Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke and four other projects as finalists for the European Prize for Contemporary Architecture. There are two finalists for the young talent award “Emerging”.
The five finalists for the Architecture Prize 2024 in the “Architecture” category are:
- TU Braunschweig Student House by Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke (both Berlin)
- Reggio School in Madrid by Andres Jaque / Office for Political Innovation (Madrid)
- Saint-François Monastery in Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano (Corsica) by Amelia Tavella Architectes (Aix en Provence)
- Plato Gallery of Contemporary Art in Ostrava by KWK Promes (Katowice)
- the open garden Hage in Lund (Sweden) by Brendeland & Kristoffersen architects (Oslo).
The jury explained its choice: “The seven works go beyond the paradigm of sustainability and honour everyday architecture, the places where we live and learn, where we meet, discuss and enjoy ourselves.”
A total of 362 architectural projects from 38 countries, including 36 from Germany, completed between April 2021 and May 2023, took part in the competition. In January, 40 projects were shortlisted.
Decision will be made on 25 April
The jury will visit the selected finalists in March. The suspense will continue until 25 April. The decision on the winning projects will then be announced at the CIVA architecture centre in Brussels, Belgium. The awards will be presented at the EUmies Awards Day on 14 May at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, Spain. In addition to the awards ceremony, there will be presentations by the winners and finalists, as well as an exhibition of the 362 participating architectural projects.
