Award-winning student designs Institute of Building Design receives awards
Six works by students at the Institute of Building Design (IEB) under the direction of Professor Dan Schürch have been honoured with various architecture awards in recent days. First and third award in the vdw Future Award and the Rudolf Lodders Award both went to Braunschweig. A master’s thesis also received the young talent award at the HeinzeArchitekturAward 2023.
Merle Riemer and Leon Kremer received the first prize of 5,000 euros in the 17th Rudolf Lodders Award 2023 for their design to convert the Galeria Karstadt department store on Bohlweg into a concert hall. The jury praised the concept, saying: “… the particularly original idea of combining the space requirements of the municipal music school and a new concert hall in an existing building, thus avoiding the need for a new building. (…) The solitary function of the ‘department stores’ is skilfully incorporated and transferred to a new level of use. This creates a unique selling point that can be very attractive”.
Antonia Stöcker and Paul Knauer received the third prize of 3,000 euros for their redesign of the C&A department stores in Braunschweig for live and work. Joschua Gobrecht and Kathleen Müller received the Rudolf Lodders Award for their reuse of the Burgpassage.
Sustainability honoured
The Association of the Housing Industry in Lower Saxony and Bremen organised the vdw Future Award 2023 between several participating institutes from various universities. The task of the competition was to design a residential building in Bremerhaven in direct dialogue with four existing terraced houses from the 1960s. The competition was endowed with a total of 8,500 euros. Till Watzlawik and Linus Pätzold won the first prize with their design ‘Quartiershöfe Bremerhaven’. They focused on upgrading existing buildings, thereby contributing to sustainability by minimising the use of resources compared to demolition and new construction. Kübra Isik and Alena Stelloh were awarded 3rd prize in the vdw Future Award 2023.
Not only did TU Braunschweig’s Student House win the Heinze ArchitekturAWARD in the “Best Cradle to Cradle” category, but one of the three young talent awards for student work also went to the Braunschweig Institute of Building Design. In his master’s thesis, Lukas Molter designed a “Faculty for Conservation and Restoration” for the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The jury praised the design: “It is this attitude between stubbornness and adaptation that we so urgently need to think the city forward. The jury is impressed by the great coherence of this work, its inner maturity, as well as the extraordinary precision and beauty of the presentation, which succeeds in conveying a strong idea to the point”.
“An honour for the students, but also for the university”
Professor Dan Schürch is delighted with the awards, which also give students a boost when starting their careers. “Prizes and awards for students are a sign of the relevance and quality of their work. The success of our teaching with our dedicated students is reflected in the numerous awards we have won in recent semesters. An honour for the students, but also an honour for the university. It shows that TU Braunschweig is at the forefront, addressing the relevant issues of today’s climate debate, demographic change and affordable housing. Congratulations to the students, you are the best!
