Prof. Johannes Wienand receives Advanced Fellowship from the Historisches Kolleg

Johannes Wienand, Professor of Ancient History at Technische Universität Braunschweig, has been awarded a scholarship from the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. He will receive the Advanced Fellowship to write a major academic monograph on panegyrics (praise of rulers, mirrors for princes) in late antiquity. He is a fellow of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.

The planned book, entitled ‘Panegyric as a Space of Interference: On the Measurement of Monarchical Authority between Antiquity and the Middle Ages’, opens up new ways of understanding the significance of panegyric fields of interaction for the negotiation of relationships of loyalty, responsibility and dependence. “What an honour and joy!”, says Professor Wienand. “I am deeply grateful to everyone who has inspired and supported me in the development of this project.”

The Historisches Kolleg has been awarding its prestigious research fellowships since 1980. The grants serve to give outstanding researchers in the field of historical studies the freedom they need to complete a major book. The fellows spend a whole year at the Historisches Kolleg. The Historisches Kolleg has awarded two Advanced Fellowships for the coming academic year.
