Linking reality and fiction Science and Art Lab at TU Braunschweig presents an installation by Hito Steyerl (Opening: 27 March, 19:30)

  • The Science and Art Lab at TU Braunschweig invites the public to visit the research region’s science showcase until the 10th of June.
  • From workshops and film screenings to lectures and discussion evenings – the programme offers a wide range of events for all those who are interested.
  • A special highlight is the large-scale installation by renowned artist Hito Steyerl, which will be on display in the Science and Art Lab from 28 March to 31 May. The exhibition will be opened on 27 March at 19:30.

Hito Steyerl is an important artist, filmmaker and author who is deeply concerned with image politics, the potential of digitality and its critical reflection. She succeeds in linking reality and fiction and in critically examining the interactions of war, economy and modern technology. Her works offer a variety of approaches and encourage reflection on the power of images and our desire for visual comprehension.

The Science and Art Lab is now showing two video works by Hito Steyerl in a large-scale installation: ExtraSpaceCraft (2016) and The Tower (2015). Almost a decade after their creation, these cinematic essays seem like bold predictions of our current reality.

The two 3-channel videos are presented in a striking, bright red platform landscape that fills the exhibition space to the brim. This immersive setting, complemented by plush designer chairs and curved monitors, allows visitors to engage with the works in a captivating way.

ExtraSpaceCraft addresses Iraq’s former national observatory, which was destroyed in the wars, and combines drone footage with dance performances by the fictional space agency “Spaceagency”. The Tower addresses Saddam Hussein’s plans to rebuild the Tower of Babel, combining historical and fictional elements with modern technologies and economic contexts.

The Science and Art Lab is delighted to bring Hito Steyerl’s multi-layered and thought-provoking works to a wide audience. In addition to the video installation, a number of other events will take place during the exhibition period, bringing together science and art and inviting dialogue.
