Lower Saxony Science Prize in three categories for TU Braunschweig

On 20 November, Science Minister Falko Mohrs presented the award to Professor Andreas Waag, Professor Patrick Schwerdtner and Master’s student Sarah Koop-Brinkmann. The prize, worth a total of 109,000 euros, recognises outstanding achievements in research, transfer, teaching and studies. Congratulations!

Into the future with change-makers and a science ecosystem

In this interview, President Angela Ittel talks about the University Development Concept 2030 and the TU’s goals for 2025, such as the development of a science ecosystem and the Change-Maker concept for people who want to develop the university.

Mobility Startup Day 2024

Abt Jerusalem-Prize awarded to economist

On 25 November, Professor Claudia Kemfert from DIW Berlin (Deutsche Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung) and University of Lüneburg will receive this year’s Abt Jerusalem-Prize, which is awarded by the TU Braunschweig, the Landeskirche Braunschweig, the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft and the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz.

Protecting health with buildings

The free knowledge portal PlanGesund.info will be launched on 4 December. The platform, coordinated by the Institute of Construction Design, Industrial and Health Care, provides practical solutions on how to integrate structural health protection into the planning of new and existing buildings.

Initiative for CO2 reduction in the building sector

Scientists from the fields of architecture and engineering have recently published a manifesto for a sustainable, cost-effective and socially acceptable climate policy in the building sector. The manifesto is the founding document of the “Initiative Praxispfad CO2-Reduktion im Gebäudesektor”, whose initiators include Prof Elisabeth Endres from the Institute for Building Climatology and Energy in Architecture.

Traminator in research mode

The Institute of Transport, Railway Construction and Operation and the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics, together with DLR and BSVG in Braunschweig, recently carried out several night-time tram measurements in Braunschweig to investigate different track types and make recommendations for future railway lines. The so-called ‘Traminator’ from 1981 was used for this purpose.

Award for outstanding research data management

Congratulations to David Anton and Prof. Henning Wessels from the Institute of Computational Modelling in Civil Engineering! Together with scientists from TU Clausthal, they were awarded the FAIR Data and Software Award Lower Saxony 2024 in the “Dataset” category at the Data Days Lower Saxony.

Visit from Tongji University

Prof Philip Yuan from Tongji University in Shanghai recently visited the Institute of Structural Design. He talked about his work integrating digital manufacturing technologies into real construction projects. There are plans to extend the collaboration between the scientists.

Surprised by the floods while studying abroad

During his semester abroad at the Universitat Politècnica de València at the end of October, architecture student Jonas Westphal directly witnessed the flood disaster in southern Spain and helped with the rescue work. He reports on his very personal experiences in our magazine.

Ivan Hirst Prize für Jost Othmer

Jost Othmer, Master’s graduate in History and German Studies, has been awarded the Ivan Hirst Prize of the Volkswagen AG Corporate Archives. This is in recognition of his Master’s thesis, supervised by Prof. Christian Kehrt and Dr Christian Götter, on the introduction of the computer at VW using the example of the NC machine tool. Congratulations!

Students, WiMis & doctoral students – your opinion is needed!

TU Braunschweig is currently in the process of revising its internationalisation strategy and is therefore inviting students, WiMis and doctoral students with and without international experience to share their insights in discussion rounds. These will take place for WiMis and doctoral students on 11 December at 12 noon in presence and on 13 December at 9:30 am online. Students can participate in person on 12 December at 3 pm or online on 13 December at 3 pm. Please register and invite your colleagues and fellow students!

The internationally renowned expert Prof. Londa Schiebinger from Stanford University will present current case studies from Gendered Innovations with reference to TU Vienna’s research priorities in a hybrid lecture and discussion event of the GeDiMINT event series on 10 December. Please register online or in person.

Practical insights into hydrogen research

On 25 November, scientists from the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Fuel Cells at the Niedersächsisches Forschungszentrum Fahrzeugtechnik (NFF) will provide insights into current research projects to make hydrogen fit for the future. The programme includes a tour of the Hydrogen Terminal and short presentations on the use of hydrogen in mobility.

Call for applications: CRoSS Fellowship of the Stifterverband

The programme, which lasts several months, supports researchers from various disciplines who are working on socially relevant topics and would like to open up their work to social actors in a collaborative format. The focus is on bringing together suitable experts from science, business and organised civil society. The deadline for applications is 6 December.

Consultancy at the PhDTalent Career Fair

On 26 November, Research Services take part at the PhDTalent Career Fair in Paris and offer individual consultation hours on open positions and other funding opportunities at TU Braunschweig.

Everything under one roof

… is the motto of the new Designated Office for Digitalisation and Sustainability and the Lower Saxony Centre for Climate Research. Together they have moved to Pockelsstraße 7. All TU members are cordially invited to the inauguration ceremony on 4 December.

Christmas greetings

The Christmas card is available as a print-ready PDF and as a digital card in the CD toolbox. In addition, the card can be individually customized in InDesign and PowerPoint for printing.

Darling of the week

… is Professor Robert Hänsch from the Institute of Plant Biology. His children’s university lecture Why do trees have stress inspired almost 700 children and 600 parents. We would like to thank him for his commitment to our students in the city and the region! There is also a children’s university podcast Clever nachgefragt! and five other podcast episodes with TU professors on ecology.

And a second favourite

Last week, the dedicated members of the Erasmus Student Network Braunschweig raised an impressive €315.28 by selling cakes at the International House. The money will go to the flood victims in the Valencia region. Many thanks for the great effort and a big thank you to everyone who bought cakes!
