► CPC foundation stone laid at Braunschweig Research Airport
On 18 August, construction work began on the Centre for Circular Production of Next Batteries and Fuel Cells (CPC). From 2027, around 150 scientists will work here on circular production and recycling processes for batteries and fuel cells. The project, with a volume of around €73 million, strengthens the BLB+ regional network as a driver for a sustainable energy transition.
► TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer IST set up new H2 infrastructure
The NFF is home to ‘H2-iNFFra’, a state-of-the-art research platform for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies developed in close cooperation between TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer IST. On 21 August, Science Minister Falko Mohrs officially handed over two funding approvals totalling around 4.3 million euros.
► From black box to explainable AI
How can the decisions made by artificial intelligence be understood? Students in the Deep Learning Lab explored this question. Working in teams, they developed award-winning creative approaches to make neural networks more transparent.
► Summer School on Nonlinear Optimization and Combinatorics
Nonlinear optimisation is a central field of modern mathematics and one of the nine topics covered by the DFG’s Priority Programme SPP 2458 ‘Combinatorial Synergies’, within which the Summer School is also located. The target audience for the Summer School from 28 August to 2 September is doctoral students, but also advanced master’s students or postdocs at the beginning of their careers.
► Podcast ‘All lost in the supermarket’
Do you already know the podcast ‘ All lost in the supermarket’? Knud Ahlborn from the Alumni & Career Service chats with former students about trends on the labour market, individual sectors and professional fields. In the latest – now twelfth – episode, he talks to Tatiana Pier and Henning Feiertag about ‘Working inside the Engine Room of AI’.
► AI and the future of science communication
Prof. Monika Taddicken and Dr. Esther Greussing, from the Institute of Communication Science, recently hosted a scoping workshop on ‘AI and the Future of Science Communication’ in Hanover. The workshop was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Around 30 international researchers from various disciplines exchanged views on how AI transforms science and its mediation in society.
► German Language Conference at Technische Universität Braunschweig
From 14 to 17 September, Braunschweig will become the centre of German studies in Germany. Our university is hosting the 28th German Studies Conference. For many years, the conference has been a joint forum for German studies scholars from all over the world. Around 600 participants will gather at Campus North to exchange ideas. Registration is open until 31 August!
► President invites participants to GAIN25 workshop
TU President Angela Ittel is attending the annual conference of the German Academic International Network (GAIN25) in Boston and inviting participants to a workshop entitled ‘Career Development in a Scientific Ecosystem – Research, Transfer and Outreach.’
► Mail from Braunschweig …
… from doctoral student Gitansh Verma from India, who spent four weeks at the Institute of Microelectronics in the summer.
► Knowledge nugget: ‘Digital spaces – real encounters’
The next Knowledge Nugget will take place on 27 August from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Under the title ‘Digital spaces – real encounters,’ we will demonstrate in a practical way how teaching, exchange and collaboration can be organised in Gather – from virtual seminar rooms and collaborative work to informal exchange formats. Register here.
► Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter: Future technologies and STEM prospects
On 22 September, Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter e.V. is hosting a STEM morning: students from Year 10 onwards will gain insights into hydrogen technologies, research projects and study and training opportunities at institutions such as TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer IST (register here).
► Books to give away
We are clearing space in our warehouse and giving away copies of the TU photo book ‘Campus in Concert – Lecture Hall, High Tech and Laboratory Work’ by photographer Aginmar from 2005, as well as a book about Jürgen Weber, ‘Sculptor, University Lecturer and Perception Researcher’ from 2001. The books will be available in the foyer of the TU building at Bienroder Weg 97 until 29 August and can be taken free of charge.
