► A milestone on the path to the “CoLiving Campus”
… is the cooperation agreement with the City of Braunschweig signed on August 28. This allows urban planning for the innovative science district on Campus North to move forward—the next step will be to further develop the design by NUWELA, the office for urban planning and landscape architecture, and Studio Sebastian Klawiter.
► North German Science Prize for the DEEP-DV Research Consortium
The consortium, jointly led by Prof. Dr. Nicole Fischer (University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf) and Prof. Dr. Melanie Brinkmann (Technical University of Braunschweig), is investigating how DNA viruses evade the immune system and remain in the body permanently. The project is receiving 83,333 euros for its cross-state collaboration. Congratulations!
► President’s Office Hours
Anyone who would like to raise a concern or share ideas—either individually or as part of a small group—can discuss them confidentially with President Angela Ittel during her office hours on September 10 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please register by September 8 via email to Karen Lehmann.
► Discussion between the Council of Research Staff (RWM) and the President
All research staff are cordially invited to the discussion on September 9 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in room PK 4.117 in the old building. The RWM will present its key topics and discuss them with the President. Relevant topics may be submitted to the Council in advance.
► Climate Change in the Himalayas
How is climate change affecting the Himalayan region? How is it altering the ecology and people’s lives? Following the devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet, Deutschlandfunk spoke with Prof. Antje Schwalb from the Institute for Geosystems and Bioindication about these issues.
► City of Wolfsburg Becomes a New Partner in the InnoReg Project
The city of Wolfsburg with the Wolfsburg Wirtschaft und Marketing GmbH (WMG) is participating in the InnoReg funding project, which strengthens small and medium-sized enterprises in particular through targeted knowledge transfer and innovation scouting. The goals are to initiate new collaborations between business and academia and to expand the region’s innovative capacity.
► Democracy Week at TU Braunschweig
Next week, the #buntstadt initiative is calling on the city to take a stand for democracy. We’ll be hosting events, too! What the principle of neutrality at universities actually means will be the topic of a lecture by Laura Vos (from the “FragDenStaat” project) on September 8. If you’d rather experience democracy in a playful way, the Community Café on September 10 is the place for you.
► New Learning and Event Space: Glass Pavilion in the Botanical Garden
The new glass pavilion, with its spacious outdoor area, offers a place for people to meet, exchange ideas, and learn together. “We would like to extend a warm invitation to all members of our university to discover this new space and bring their own ideas to it,” says Prof. Robert Hänsch, Executive Director of the Institute of Plant Biology and the Botanical Garden.
► Let’s go: City Cycling 2026 is kicking off!
And it starts as early as September 6! So: Hop on your bike and rack up kilometers for the climate as part of the TU Braunschweig team. Register now and join the ride – every kilometer counts!
► “Who shapes our future – us or AI?”
That’s the title of the current lecture series at the Phaeno Science Center. On September 10, TU guest Dr. Esther Greussing (Institute for Communication Sciences) will speak about AI in daily information gathering. Feel free to stop by!
► 60 Years of Star Trek: Interactive Theme Night at the Wolfsburg Planetarium
Fans of the cult series are in for a treat: On September 18, the Wolfsburg Planetarium will screen “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” Before the film, physics students from our university will explain the scientific principles behind Star Trek technologies. There is an admission fee for the film screening, but the pre-show program is free.
► Next week at the Science Showcase with the Science & Art Lab
On September 8, interested participants will work alongside TU researchers and artists from the Kunstverein Jahnstraße to create their own pigments and use them to design images. A final “duet” will take place on September 10 with students Freyja Grimsdottir-Hoff (HBK Braunschweig) and Joshua Seelig (TU Braunschweig).
► Information Session on Responsible Research
How can freedom of research and legal requirements be balanced without hindering innovation? An interdisciplinary discussion panel organized by the Commission for Ethics in Security-Related Research will address this topic on October 26. Please register by September 30 with Dr. Carolina Esser.
► Our darling of the week
… answers all the burning questions children ages eight to twelve have about the climate: Why are cities getting hotter? What protects our coasts? And why is the soil a climate superhero? November marks the return of Kids’ University! Registration begins on September 18.
