► Mathematical decision support
Professor Timo de Wolff and Janin Heuer from the Institute of Analysis and Algebra, in cooperation with computer scientists and medical doctors from the University of Stuttgart, the company Arctoris and the Young Academy, they have developed a mathematical decision aid that calculates which method is most effective in identifying all Covid-19 sufferers in a pool of samples from different people. They have published the results in a preprint.
► From university to hospital
Together with the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, the TU Braunschweig supports the Hospital in the evaluation of SARS-CoV2 tests. Professor Dieter Jahn and Dr. Martina Jahn have organized the support for this at the Carolo-Wilhelmina. We spoke with PhD student Jan-Niklas Weber and biology student Franziska Grüner, who are helping the laboratory team at the hospital with sample preparation and evaluation.
► The summer semester 2020
… will be an online semester. There will be no classroom teaching until the end of the lecture period. However, examinations and internships, which cannot be implemented in any other way, will take place on site. It is a logistical mammoth task to take the necessary security precautions. Thanks to all colleagues who are currently working on the concrete implementation, calculating minimum sizes for examination rooms and implementing hygiene measures and much more..
► Celebration of the anniversary will not take place
That’s too bad! We had already suspected it, and now it is certain: Our university anniversary cannot be celebrated as it was planned. The central ceremony on June 12th will not take place and will not be postponed to a later date. Accordingly, the recommendation to cancel it has now been withdrawn. The Presidium of the Carolo-Wilhelmina would like to thank all those who have been involved in the run-up to the event.
► Keel-up on the Oker
We miss our events! But there is also good news: Under the motto “Principle of Hope” the light parcours of the city of Braunschweig is to start on June 13th. One of the exhibits is an installation by the Institut für Architekturbezogene Kunst (IAK). The artwork will be on display on the Oker, east of the Wendentor Bridge. Architecture students are currently implementing the “Kieloben” design in small group work and multi-shift operation in Querumer Forst.
► Tips for barrier-free accessible online teaching
The digital semester presents great challenges for students in special situations. Nora Hartwig, representative for the interests of students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, has compiled some tips for low-barrier online teaching.
► Best practice by teachers for teachers
The project house starts on 20 May with the webinar series “Digital Semester – Reports on Teaching Experience”, in which teachers report on their digital teaching activities and the switch to digital and exchange information.
► Congratulations
to Professor Peter Lemmens! The head of the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics and two Ukrainian colleagues have awarded the B. I. Verkin Prize together with two Ukrain colleagues. The Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine awarded the prize for the outstanding work on the prediction and experimental detection of cooperative phenomena in the latest solid state systems, topological insulators and exotic superconductors. The three have been working together for 20 years now and have written more than 50 joint publications.
► Green darling of the week
The Botanical Garden is one of our favorite places on the campus all year long. Right now, we especially like it, because from now on the main part is open for visitors again. Up to 100 people at the same time can now walk there again and enjoy the beautiful garden. Of course, the rules of distance must be observed, but there is nothing to stop you from taking a walk in the greenery. We look forward to good weather and sunshine next week.
