► The best route for cyclists

What marks an attractive cycling route? Psychologist Susanne Grüner is a doctoral student in the “Social Cars” graduate college. With her research, she wants to ensure that a lot of bicycles drive on attractive bike lanes through Future Cities.

► Fending off image manipulation

On websites or via Messenger and mail: Digital images are constantly being automatically reduced in size. But the underlying algorithms can be manipulated. A team of the Institute of System Security now presents an effective defence.

► Lake flies telling of prehistoric times

The “Schöninger Spears” are the oldest hunting weapons in the world. A research project of the Institute of Geosystems and Bioindication is researching the environment in which they were used for hunting. Fossil lake flies larvae reveal how hot the summer was – 300,000 years ago.

► Funding available for knowledge transfer and corona research

The DFG has launched two new calls for research proposals: The first for projects that want to research the effects of COVID-19 (deadline 7 September). The second for projects that combine science and application (deadline: 30 September).

► Awards for software development projects

About 160 students applied for their software development projects via video. Now a jury from research and business selected the best teams. The winner is “SherloQL”. An app that lets hobby detectives puzzle through Braunschweig and teaches casually database language.

► A new biology curriculum

With students and teachers together: The project “Lebenswissenschaft im Wandel” aims to enhance the bachelor-curriculum in biology. Dr. Simone Karrie sums up the progress so far.
