► University Council on the strategic orientation of TU
On 1 July, the University Council of TU Braunschweig held a regular meeting at the Open Hybrid LabFactory (OHLF) in Wolfsburg. A statement on the strategic orientation of TU Braunschweig was adopted.
► Foundation stone laid for new pharmacy building
Together with Science Minister Falko Mohrs and Mayor Thorsten Kornblum, TU President Angela Ittel ceremoniously buried a time capsule in the foundation of the new building. The new building, which cost around 50 million euros, will provide modern teaching and research facilities for pharmacy students and scientists.
► DFG funds DNA virus research with €5.3 million
The DEEP-DV research group led by Prof. Melanie Brinkmann (TU Braunschweig) and Prof. Nicole Fischer (UKE) will receive funding for another four years. The aim is to investigate the mechanisms of DNA viruses.
► Transfer: Startup Factory for Life Sciences in Lower Saxony
The Göttingen–Hanover–Braunschweig region will be home to one of ten nationwide start-up factories in the EXIST flagship competition: GOe FUTURE promotes the life science start-up ecosystem and is supported by 34 partner institutions, including TU Braunschweig with its research focus on ‘Engineering for Health’. With an investment volume of up to €20 million, GOe FUTURE is one of the largest life science start-up initiatives in Germany.
► Transfer to HBK: Congratulations to Bernt Erlewein
On 9 July, Bernt Erlewein was elected full-time Vice President of the Braunschweig University of Art. As long-standing head of the TU’s Human Resources, Legal Affairs and Academic Affairs division, he brings with him extensive administrative experience. We congratulate him on his election and look forward to continuing our close cooperation within our shared ecosystem.
► Richmond Sarpong mit Inhoffen-Medaille ausgezeichnet
The HZI Support Association and the Technical University of Braunschweig are honouring Prof. Richmond Sarpong from the University of California, Berkeley, with the Inhoffen Medal 2025. Sarpong is an organic chemist who has achieved outstanding success in synthetic chemistry and method development.
► Crowdfunding for “Research on Language”
The new open-access journal “Research on Language” has been included by the Specialised Information Service for Educational Science and Educational Research as one of five journals in the 2025 crowdfunding package. The journal is co-edited by Prof. Katharina Kellermann from the Institute of German Studies.
► New ideas for old Kaufhof
As part of the ‘KAUF-AUS: Chance for Heidelberg’s Urban Culture’ project, organised by the Institute for Architectural Design (IAD), an exhibition is presenting 13 master’s theses dealing with the reuse of the former Galeria Kaufhof building. The designs can be viewed on large-format plans attached to the fences surrounding the department store.
► Inaugural lecture
Professor Christian Dietrich, Institute of Operating Systems and Computer Networks, will hold his inaugural lecture “Upgrades und Updates: Systemsoftware zwischen Hardwareevolution und Softwarekomplexität!” on 16 July.
► Young Software Developers’ Day
On 17 July, around 190 students from the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Computer and Communication Systems Engineering and Mathematics will present the results of this year’s software development internship. Prizes will be awarded to the three best teams.
► Battery research: Awarded in Singapore
Raphael Ginster, research assistant at the AIP Institute, received the Graedel Best Paper Prize at the 12th International Conference on Industrial Ecology in Singapore. The topic of the publication: ‘Circular Battery Production in the EU’. Congratulations!
► Digitising teaching made easy
Would you like to live stream a lecture, make teaching content from the laboratory available digitally, or prepare video elements for a course? The teaching laboratories at the faculties offer high-quality equipment for these and other scenarios.
► „Profs@Turntables“ planned on 20 November
At this popular party series, professors from TU Braunschweig, Ostfalia and HBK join professional DJs in Braunschweig clubs to spin records. The proceeds go to charitable projects in the region. To register and for more information, please contact kontakt@profs-at-turntables-bs.de .
► Alumni and students exchange ideas at Radio Okerwelle
Alumni and students got together to reminisce, chat about lifelong learning and, last but not least, share their favourite songs from their time at university. The programme will be broadcast on 16 July at 7 p.m. and on 17 July at 9 a.m. on Radio Okerwelle 104.6.
► Call for entries for photo competition – DFG calendar 2026
The DFG is looking for photos for its 2026 wall calendar on the theme of ‘NETWORKS’. All DFG-funded projects are eligible to participate. Please send your photos in printable resolution with a description of the project and specific image content to kalender@dfg.de by 15 September.
► Darling of the week
The video clip is called “Von hier an geht’s aufwärts!” (From here on upwards!): It is part of the ‘Science Up’ city campaign, which highlights Braunschweig as a diverse and important research city that extends beyond the region.
