Strengthening the regional battery ecosystem in Braunschweig Objective: Identify new potential for cooperation, from materials to recycling
On 7 November 2025, stakeholders and decision-makers along the battery value chain came together for the first networking event of the battery ecosystem in the Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region. The aim of the newly founded network is to raise the profile of regional expertise in battery development, production technologies and recycling, to promote exchange between industry, research and development, and to tap into new potential for cooperation, from materials to recycling. The meeting was supported by the Ecoversity Initiative of Technische Universität Braunschweig.
At the invitation of the three TU research centres – BLB+ Braunschweig LabFactories for Batteries and More, the Lower Saxony Research Centre for Vehicle Technology and the Open Hybrid LabFactory – more than 50 representatives from research, industry and development took part. These included members of Technische Universität Braunschweig, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Applied Materials Research, Niedersachsen.next Automotive Agency, REWIMET e.V., Regionale EnergieAgentur e.V., LB.systems GmbH and H.C. Starck Tungsten Powders.
Workshops with concrete insights
In order to identify concrete opportunities and potential for the regional battery ecosystem, the participants engaged in lively, solution-oriented discussions on two central topics:
- ‘Value creation: competencies and challenges along the industrial value chain’
- ‘Strengthening the ecosystem & growing together: possible formats, funding landscapes and collaborations’
There was agreement on two points in particular:
- A strong battery ecosystem requires greater transparency, close cooperation and regular exchange between science, business and industry.
- In order to accelerate the exchange of knowledge, joint strategies must be established, transfer platforms expanded and bureaucratic hurdles removed.
The next steps
The wide range of ideas, assessments and impulses will first be evaluated in order to derive concrete starting points and measures for future-oriented battery research in the Braunschweig-Wolfsburg region and beyond. Scientists and other stakeholders along the battery value chain who would like to join the network are cordially invited to contact Edith Uhlig (BLB+), Dr. Stefan Schmitt (OHLF) or Nadine Pieper (NFF).
