Parking space management at TU Braunschweig

The increasing pressure on public parking spaces has made it necessary for TU Braunschweig to introduce a modern parking space management system in its private car parks. The aim is to make the use of parking spaces fairer for TU members. Preparations for the parking management system will begin this year, and it will be implemented in all TU car parks from the first quarter of 2026.

In recent years, increasing parking pressure in the neighbourhoods adjacent to the main campus has led to TU parking spaces being increasingly occupied by external users, resulting in fewer parking spaces being available to TU members. The comprehensive introduction of parking space management is intended to counteract this development and at the same time create fair parking conditions for all TU members.

Preparations for the introduction of parking space management in all TU Braunschweig car parks will begin at the end of the year. To this end, cameras will be installed in the car parks to record number plates, and an online platform will be set up where TU members who wish to use these car parks can register.

How does parking control work?

Parking control is fully automated by cameras that record the number plates of cars entering and leaving the car park. These are compared with the number plates that users have registered when they signed up. Vehicles that are parked in the car park without authorisation can thus be identified and their owners fined. This ensures that TU Braunschweig parking spaces are not occupied by unauthorised parkers. The personal data of vehicle owners recorded is processed in the cloud in accordance with the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Compliance with data protection guidelines by the provider has been verified by the TU’s data protection officer. External visitors are informed about the recording of number plates by signs at the entrances.

How much are the parking fees and how are they paid?

The parking fee is €10 per month and can be paid online. This fee is used to finance the necessary technical system for parking space control. Payment of parking fees is only mandatory for people who wish to use the parking spaces. Users can also register more than one vehicle, so that carpooling or parking with second vehicles is also possible. However, it is important to note that only one of the registered vehicles may be parked in the parking spaces at any one time. Parking fees can be paid on a monthly, annual or subscription basis. Special groups of people, such as severely disabled persons, can be exempted from payment, and there will be special registration options for company cars, service providers and guests. In addition, there will be hardship provisions.

When will parking space management begin and how will it proceed?

Once the tendering process has been completed, the cameras installed and the online registration platform set up, a test phase will begin. Regular parking management is expected to start in the first quarter of 2026. As soon as all the necessary information is available, it will be published on the TU Braunschweig parking management website. The start of registration and other important information and changes will be sent to TU members in circulars and published in the internal newsletter ‘Die Woche’ (The Week).
