Prof. Andreas Hördt designated president of the DGG
On 26 February 2025, Prof. Andreas Hördt was elected to the executive committee of the German Geophysical Society (DGG) as designated president at the general meeting in Bochum. He will take over as president in 2027.
Prof. Andreas Hördt heads the Applied Geophysics Group at the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics. The group develops methods to determine the electrical and magnetic properties of the soil and deeper rock layers down to depths of several hundred metres. The electrical and magnetic properties can be used, for example, to locate groundwater, characterise ores or detect unexploded bombs.
The DGG was founded in 1922 and currently has around 1100 members. Beno Gutenberg, co-founder of the society and after whom the Gutenberg Richter Scale for measuring the strength of earthquakes is named, was president of the DGG in 1954. The last president from Braunschweig was Walter Kertz from 1963 to 1964.
