From Classical Music to Pop: Studying Music at TU Braunschweig Info day offers an insight into the practical side of teacher training

The Institute of Music and Music Education at Technische Universität Braunschweig is organising several events to provide information about the Music/Music Education studies and the required assessment procedure. Prospective students can register until 31 May 2024.

Education at TU Braunschweig is practical and musically diverse – from classical to pop. In view of current developments, the institute also offers electronic music as a major artistic subject as part of the teacher training programme. Students can develop their own individual study plan from pre-defined components such as DJing, live electronics or sound design.

Although the double major Bachelor’s degree is designed to prepare students for the Master’s degree in Teacher Training Course: Grundschulen, Haupt- und Realschulen, it also prepares students for other advanced music-oriented degree programmes, as well as for various professional fields in the cultural sector and extracurricular music education.

Assessment procedure in June and July

The prerequisite for studying Music at TU Braunschweig is a successfully completed assessment procedure, which consists of an interview in which the applicant’s previous knowledge of playing an instrument and/or singing as well as aural training and music theory are assessed. For the start of the winter semester 2024/2025, the assessment procedures will take place in person on 4 and 19 June and 4 July 2024. The deadline for registration is one week before each examination date.

Insights into exams and study content

Prior to the assessment procedure, the Institute of Music and Music Education also offers information events to find out about the procedure and content and to get to know the institute and the degree programme better.

Staff from the institute will provide information about the examination, the programme and the study content. Second-semester students share their experiences of the last assessment test and the first year of study. The student representation, consisting of elected representatives of the music student body, will introduce themselves and talk about their work and everyday life as students. There will also be a guided tour of the institute.

The following dates are offered:

  • May, 13:15, online
  • May, 13:15, in presence at the Institute of Music and Music Education, Rebenring 58, 38106 Braunschweig, large music hall

Please register by email: s.leser@tu-braunschweig.de

Info day with workshops

In addition, on 24 May, following the Hochschulinformationstag (university information day), the institute will offer insights into the practice of teacher training in two workshops. Sarah Leser, lecturer and music teacher at the Comeniusstraße primary school in Braunschweig, will offer the workshop “Barocke Klangwelten: Vivaldis Vier Jahreszeiten für die Grundschule entdecken!” (Baroque Soundscapes: Discovering Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for Primary School). Pupils will be immersed in Vivaldi’s life, working scenically and visually, learning methods of intensive listening and exploring the world of the Four Seasons through making music together. Various practical approaches to music education in primary schools will also be developed.

In the workshop “Dein Lieblingssong – deine Band!“ (Your favourite song – your band!) by Peer Frenzke, lecturer and music teacher at the Apollonia Oberschule in Uelzen, the pupils will learn about alternative forms of notation, retuned guitars and playing aids that allow easy access to making music together and ensure quick implementation on the instruments. Digital media and sound generators will also be integrated into the workshop. Participants can bring their own digital “instruments” such as loop stations, tablets (with various apps), DJ consoles or drum pads.

24 May, 15:15 – 18:30 (following the University Information Day (HIT))
Institute of Music and Music Education, Rebenring 58, Braunschweig
