► HELiPOD measures plant health from the air
The HELiPOD helicopter-towed probe is currently being used in Italy. As part of a measurement campaign by the European Space Agency (ESA), it records the condition of vegetation from above. The aim is to detect signs of drought or heat stress early on, enabling climate-adapted measures to be taken in agriculture.
► Magnetic cooling with desert minerals
The mineral atacamite exhibits an unusual effect when exposed to cold: its temperature changes drastically when a magnetic field is applied – a phenomenon known as the magnetocaloric effect. Researchers at TU Braunschweig and HZDR have studied this material in order to develop new, energy-efficient cooling technologies.
