► Vice President unanimously re-elected
On 12 June, the Senate unanimously confirmed the re-election of part-time Vice President Professor Katja Koch for Teacher Education for a fourth term of office.
► Summervibes: Music meets science
The North Campus will become a festival site on 22 June. The new one-day festival format “Summervibes X Campusnord” invites you to enjoy the sounds of various live bands and a hands-on science exhibition from 3 pm. The free festival is organised by TU Braunschweig in cooperation with the AStA and the Jugendring Braunschweig.
► Green light for new physics and pharmacy buildings
The budget and finance committee of the Lower Saxony state parliament approved the funds for the new physics and pharmacy buildings on 12 June. The old physics building in Mendelssohnstraße 2 will be replaced by the new physics teaching and laboratory building. The pharmacy will also receive a replacement building, which is to be built north of the existing pharmacy centre.
► Alumni talk with Markus Rex
The German research vessel “Polarstern” drifted frozen in the Arctic Ocean for a year. At the Alumni Talk on 25 June, the leader of the MOSAiC expedition, Markus Rex, will talk about the dramatic climate change in the Arctic, everyday life on the ship and the first results of this unique expedition.
► New Future Lab: digitalisation in the circular economy
The new ZDIN Future Lab will research digital solutions for the sustainable and efficient use of natural resources. It will receive €3.7 million from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and the Volkswagen Foundation. The TU Braunschweig is part of the project consortium with two institutes.
► What to do about a bite from a black widow spider?
To reduce the risks of a spider bite, patients have so far taken a serum of animal origin. Under the leadership of the TU Braunschweig, an international consortium has now developed human antibodies – with fewer side effects and without animal testing.
► Inaugural lectures
Professors of the Institute of Psychology will give their inaugural lectures on 18 June: Prof. Lars Gerhold about “Wie sicher wollen wir leben? – Resilienz durch soziotechnische Systeme” and Prof. Sarah Schäfer about “Resilienz – Was hält in Krisen gesund? Und wenn ja, wie viele?”.
► Prof. Stephan A. Sieber receives Inhoffen Medal
The TUM chemist was honoured on 13 June for his research into new drugs to combat multi-resistant bacteria. The prize, which is worth 8,000 euros, is awarded annually by the Friends of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and the TU Braunschweig. Congratulations!
► Congratulations …
… to Prof. Christopher Teskey from the Institute of Organic Chemistry. On 7 June, the scientist was one of three award winners to receive the 75,000 euro Dozentenpreis (Lecturer Award) from the „Fonds der Chemischen Industrie“, one of the highest awards for young scientists in the field of chemistry.
► There is also a prize for …
… Dr Lucca Richter. On 3 June, he received the Rudolf Urtel Prize 2023 for his dissertation “A 5G New Radio Terrestrial Broadcast System”, which he wrote at the Institute of Communications Engineering. The prize is intended to promote excellent achievements by young engineers in the fields of television, film and electronic media. We warmly congratulate!
► Sustainability awards presented
As part of the TUmorrow Days, the TUmorrow Awards were presented in four categories. The winners were honoured for their special commitment to the topic of sustainability. The prizes, each worth 500 euros, are awarded by the Green Office in cooperation with the Braunschweigischer Hochschulbund.
► Geophysics makes you happy …
… that’s what two students and a doctoral student experienced on an expedition to Norway with Prof. Andreas Hördt. They travelled to Finnmark, north of the Arctic Circle, to take geoelectric measurements on frozen peat bogs.
► For more educational equality
To enable children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to receive support at school, TU students offer free tutoring for pupils. A commitment that pays off for both sides. Nevertheless, the waiting list is long.
► Integrating practical projects into teaching
After the Social Impact Festival, the Knowledge Transfer team will be hosting the workshop “From Service Learning to Impact Learning – practical projects in teaching” on 15 July from 12:00 to 14:00. It will provide input on how practical projects can be better integrated into teaching with social impact. Please register by 5 July at saskia.frank@tu-braunschweig.de.
► A digital bouquet of flowers
… presents the Agnes Pockels Laboratory to the Ecki-Wohlgehagen Foundation and the Braunschweig Community Foundation. The two foundations donated an atomic force microscope that now enables pupils to carry out experiments investigating surfaces at the nanoscale.
► International Cooperation in DFG Individual Research Grants
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) maintains cooperation agreements with a number of funding organisations in Europe and worldwide that offer complementary funding possibilities in order to facilitate transnational research activities.
► Darling of the week
Our two darlings of the week are already popular photo subjects: the two installations by the Institute for Architecture-Related Art for the Braunschweig Light Parcours. A swarm of jellyfish near the Wendentor Bridge, which glows in the dark, attracts attention, as does the watchtower with a no-go zone on the Sidonien Bridge. We look forward to the start of the Light Art Exhibition on 15 June!
► Events
There is always something going on at TU Braunschweig. Lectures, discussions, information events, concerts and much more. Take a look at our calendar of events and get inspired.
