► Honorary doctorate for Prof Rainald Löhner

On 8 April, the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences honoured TU alumnus Prof. Rainald Löhner for his outstanding contributions to engineering science. Löhner is Director of the Centre for Computational Fluid Dynamics at the College of Sciences at George Mason University in the USA. He is a regular guest at the Institute of Statics and Dynamics, where he works together with staff and students on “High Fidelity Digital Twins”.

What’s going on in the quantum year?

In the quantum year 2025, various events organised by the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence will present exciting perspectives on 100 years of quantum physics. Among other things, a Science Watch Party and a performance exhibition will provide fascinating insights into the quantum world.

► Quantum technology up close

… is on display in a hands-on exhibition at the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg. The prototype, which is being shown for the first time to mark World Quantum Day on 14 April, was created in collaboration with Professors Rainer Müller of TU Braunschweig and Nabeel Aslam of the University of Leipzig.

► Sustainable recycling management for plastic and CFRP components

A central component of the BMBF-funded research campus Open Hybrid Lab Factory is the project “CirProTech”, whose kick-off meeting took place at the end of March. The aim is to develop innovative strategies for the recycling of plastic and CFRP components – with combined forces of research and industry.

► Rethinking language education

Katharina Kellermann is new professor of German Language Didactics at the Institute for German Studies. She already got to know TU Braunschweig during her doctoral phase. Professor Kellermann researches how language acquisition and the development of linguistic skills can be specifically promoted. A very warm welcome!

► With bamboo and Lego bridges

And welcome back! Prof. Vincent Oettel is Head of the Concrete Construction Division of the Institute of Building Materials, Concrete Construction and Fire Safety (iBMB). He knows our university well: he studied at TU Braunschweig, did his doctorate here and was a senior engineer at the iBMB. In our interview, he talks about his research into high-performance concrete, bamboo as reinforcement and modular bridge systems reminiscent of Lego.

► Robert Strötgen on the Board of Trustees of the Herzog August Library

The Director of the University Library, Robert Strötgen, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Herzog August Library (HAB) in Wolfenbüttel by Lower Saxony’s Science Minister, Falko Mohrs. The five-year term of office began on 1 April.

University:Future Festival

On 13 May, Altgebäude and Media Lab will host the University:Future Festival – a day dedicated to future tech in teaching and studying. Staff, lecturers, students and external guests can look forward to a varied programme of keynotes, lectures and workshops. The line-up includes Aya Jaff, Jürgen Geuter and Keith Ranaldi.

► From King Arthur to Tolkien to “Star Trek

“Fantastic Worlds” is the focus of the lecture series’, organised by Prof. Andrea Schindler of the Institute of German Studies. Starting on 15 April, the 13 lectures will range from the legendary Arthurian novels to classic 19th and 20th century fantasy and modern fantasy and science fiction universes.

► Accompanying programme for the “Straßner Collection”

An art collection rediscovered! Until 8 June, the Straßner Collection of TU Braunschweig is on display at the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig. The exhibition ‘Excavated! Realism from Aristide Maillol to the ZEBRA Group” is accompanied by a series of lectures and guided tours with curator Dr Laura Breede.

Long COVID Action Day

On 15 May, the Company Integration Management and the Cooperation Office for Universities and Trade Unions cordially invite students, employees, managers and all interested parties to the Long COVID Action Day at TU.

Ongoing funding opportunity for Japanese-German International Research Training Groups

The DFG and JSPS have renewed their joint funding for Japanese-German International Research Training Groups (IRTGs), open to all subject areas covered by JSPS. Joint draft proposals can be submitted at any time and are processed continuously. For more information, please visit the DFG website or contact forschungsservice@tu-braunschweig.de.

Being curious and immersing oneself in the world of science for a day – that’s what schoolchildren were able to do at this year’s Future Day on 3 April. Our darlings of the week are all the institutes and facilities that opened their doors to provide an exciting insight into research and technology, and whose dedication and commitment helped to inspire amazement and fascination for careers beyond the stereotypes.
