► TUmorrow Days: Sustainability in action
The Sustainability Days will take place from 11 to 13 June for the third year running. The focus is on how TU Braunschweig itself can be made more sustainable. The programme also includes workshops, lectures and discussions on topics such as climate change, social justice and sustainable development.
► St John’s wort: important steps in biosynthesis discovered
St. John’s wort, one of the best-known medicinal plants, has complex constituents with promising medicinal properties. To be able to extract them, the steps of the biosynthesis pathway must be known. This is precisely where scientists at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology have made a breakthrough. The new findings have been published in “Nature Communications”.
► The architecture of the software
A warm welcome to Prof. Christian Dietrich! He is the new head of the Reliable System Software group at the Institute for Operating Systems and Computer Networks. In our interview, he explains why system software is always caught between two stools and the challenges it faces.
► Picture of the month
The fluorescence image by Sebastian Krischke shows the release agent coating of a die-casting tool in false colour. The researchers at the Institute of Joining and Welding Technology can use it to evaluate the amount of release agent on the surface and optimise it accordingly for better metal casting results.
► Remaining places on the architectural tour of the student centre
On 13 June, two guided tours with the two architects Gustav Düsing and Max Hacke will provide insights into the contemporary architecture of the multi-award-winning student house. Registration is required.
► Inaugural lecture
Prof. David E. Rival, Institute of Fluid Mechanics, will hold his Inaugural lecture “Diving into the depths of the Cambrian Explosion: How fluid mechanics shaped the origins of vertebrate life” on 11 Juni.
► Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship for Johanna Bürger
Johanna Bürger is a doctoral student and research assistant at the Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded annually to up to 30 doctoral students in the fields of aerospace engineering and space sciences at an international level.
► Save the date: Listen to the (real) experts
The role of researchers in social media during crises is the focus of the final event of the DFG project “Science Communication during Pandemics and the Role of Public Engagement” (SCan) of the Institute for Communication Science on 1 October in Berlin. Prof. Melanie Brinkmann and Prof. Christian Drosten will also take part in the discussion.
► Networking at the EuroScience Open Forum
Resea‘FAIR Data and Software Award Lower Saxony 2024’rch Services will be present at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF24) in Katowice, Poland, and at the associated EU Talent Fair on June 13 with a workshop on “Research Services for Career Development” and will network with European researchers on current career opportunities at TU Braunschweig.
► FAIR Data and Software Award Lower Saxony 2024
The Lower Saxony Research Data Management Initiative invites scientists from all disciplines to submit entries for the “FAIR Data and Software Award Lower Saxony 2024” by 4 August! The best data and the best software publication will be awarded 3,000 euros each.
► A digital bouquet of flowers
… goes from the Relationship Management team of the Transfer Service to the tenant of the company canteen in the old building, Sabine Maurer. After 22 years, she will be ending canteen operations on 20 June. In addition to the canteen, she has also provided catering for many events. We are sure that many regular customers will join the team in thanking her and saying “She is definitely a piece of this university’s endearing history”.
► Darling of the week
… is the researching biology student Ronja Friedhoff. During her studies, she succeeded in decoding genetic information from various medicinal plants. At the end of May, she presented her findings to a wide audience of experts at the international London Calling 2024 conference. The genetic information obtained can now be used to trace the biosynthesis pathways of plant-based active ingredients.
► Events
There is always something going on at TU Braunschweig. Lectures, discussions, information events, concerts and much more. Take a look at our calendar of events and get inspired.
