► Preparations have begun for the TU Braunschweig Ecoversity project “Strategically developing potential”
The core of the €22.5 million project is to make even better use of the high potential of our enormously powerful region through structurally supportive measures. Together with its partners in the ecosystem, TU Braunschweig will develop into a collaborative, future-oriented place of learning, teaching, research and work. Many preparatory measures are currently underway. The deadline for the start of funding is 1 July. For a portion of the funds raised, university-wide, topic-specific calls for proposals are being prepared so that you, dear TU members, can contribute your ideas. We look forward to realising the collaborative ecosystem of the TU Braunschweig together with you.
► Start for the Science Window in Braunschweig’s City Centre
The Science and Art Lab now is the first guest in the new “Science Window” at Waisenhausdamm 8 in Braunschweig, which opened on 4 March. Here, the research institutions of the ForschungRegion Braunschweig present their fields of research and results. The Science and Art Lab programme includes film screenings, discussions, lectures and workshops for schoolchildren until the beginning of June.
► The spaceship among converters
For an audio file to be a pleasure to listen to, a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) must convert the digital MP3 information into an analogue audio track. A DAC doesn’t even break a sweat. But when it comes to applications such as 6G mobile communications, the best DACs reach their limits. Therefore, Professors Vadim Issakov and Thomas Schneider want to turn mediocre DACs into true all-rounders.
► Second life for concrete
The Institute for Particle Technology in the Collaborative Research Centre “Additive Manufacturing in Construction” (AMC) is investigating how to obtain recycled particles by recycling concrete from scrapped buildings for the 3D printing technology “Selective Paste Intrusion”. Our picture of the month for March shows a close-up of one such particle.
► Where are the cool places in Braunschweig?
The “Co-Adapted Braunschweig (COABS)” project calls on Braunschweig residents to digitally enter places to cool off on hot days on a cool places map by 27 March. The results will be made available to the public on the internet.
► Responsible research
With increasing digital connectivity, researchers have access to more personal data than ever before. Data protection, personal rights and the safety of individuals must be paramount when collecting data. To minimise ethical risks, a new framework should create transparency and ensure uniform compliance with ethical standards in research.
► Prof. Andreas Hördt designated president of the DGG
On 26 February 2025, Prof. Andreas Hördt was elected to the executive committee of the German Geophysical Society (DGG) as designated president at the general meeting in Bochum. He will take over as president in 2027. Congratulations!
► Until the end of March: trial period for Scopus AI
The tool, provided by the University Library, allows users to search the database using natural language in over 27,000 peer-reviewed journals and over 330,000 books and explore a wide range of research topics using automatically generated summaries. The database is available on site, via VPN or Shibboleth until the end of March. Feedback can be sent to: m.kotzyba@tu-braunschweig.de.
► Salary negotiations for women
Today is Equal Pay Day: This day symbolically marks the gender pay gap, which was 18 percent in Germany in 2023. On 24 June, the graduate academy GradTUBS is organising a workshop for female doctoral students on the topic of “Salary Negotiations for Women”.
► SE²A and PTB: Burning for Science
On the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), the SE²A Cluster of Excellence, together with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), is organising the seminar “Burning for Science – A Woman in a Technical Field” on 13 March at 4 p.m. Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, a pioneer in the field of combustion, will present selected examples of current research and reflect on important elements for an academic career as a woman in a technical field.
► Women Involvement in Science and Engineering Research (WISER)
Researchers from India and Germany have until 31 March to submit applications to the Indo-German Science and Technology Centre for funding of a joint project in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. For more information, please contact Dr Astrid Sebastian.
► Online course “Teaching and Learning for Global Competence”
The online course, offered by the Project House’s International Teaching Lab, provides practical tips for lecturers who want to switch to English as a teaching language and/or internationalise their courses. The course starts in April and registration is now open.
► Doctoral Prize for Natural Product Research
Dr Anton Möllerke from the Institute of Organic Chemistry has been awarded the 2025 DECHEMA Doctoral Prize for Natural Product Research. He succeeded in exploring the extraordinary chemistry of collembolans (springtails), which differs significantly from the chemistry of insects, and discovered a large number of natural products. Congratulations!
► Open Call for Impact for PhD students and postdocs
The focus of this call is to enable doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to plan and implement their own impact projects with societal groups and organisations in a multi-directional and co-creative way, thus enriching their own research with new ideas. Funding criteria.
► Darling of the week
The region’s most talented young researchers presented their projects at the regional “Jugend forscht” competition in Braunschweig last Friday. TU Braunschweig was there with numerous hands-on activities and information. It supported the jury with eight scientists and donated two special prizes. Congratulations to Marielle Elfers and Simon Kawohl for their second place in the Physics category and to Jannat Touati for a special prize. Both projects were supported by changING of the SE²A Cluster of Excellence.
