► Confident for the future

Following the decisions of the Excellence Initiative, President Prof. Angela Ittel is focusing on the strategic research orientation of TU Braunschweig. She discussed this with Dr. Jörn Rieckhoff, Head of SPK and Press Officer at TU Braunschweig.

► CampusXperience: What to expect from Campus Expeditions

Come and discover the laboratories and facilities of the TU on 21 June between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.! All guests are invited to attend exciting show experiments and tours of high-tech facilities.There are 45 different expeditions to choose from, most of which are offered in both German and English. BSVG shuttle buses will transport guests to the starting points of the expeditions free of charge and in comfort. Advance registration is requested.

► What might tomorrow’s villages look like?

Scenarios for Wasbüttel in the district of Gifhorn were designed by architecture students and the SpACE Lab team at the ISU – Institute for Sustainable Urbanism. Their findings have now been presented to the public in an exhibition.

► Is the Third Pole really getting greener?

With the help of satellite remote sensing scientists have observed an increased greening of the grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau, which they interpret as a sign of improved vegetation. However, local yak herders report that the grazing land is deteriorating. An interdisciplinary team from our university has investigated this apparent contradiction.

► Student survey: “How are you?”

How are students at our university doing? What is going well and what could be improved? The Department of Academic and Student Affairs has created a health survey called “How are you?” to find out about the conditions students encounter in their everyday studies, the things that support them and the things that stress them.

► Guest lecture: Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG

On 1 July, Gunnar Groebler will give a guest lecture in the Audimax. He will discuss the current challenges facing the German steel industry, as well as the measures that Salzgitter AG has taken to decarbonise and transform steel production. Registration is not required.

► Citizen science project receives award

At this year’s Hydrology Day, the DO IT (Digitisation of Analogue Records in Time) project, run by the Department of Hydrology and River Basin Management at the Leichtweiss Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, was honoured for its practical relevance. In the DO IT project, citizen scientists with no prior experience or special training can digitise scanned measurement data, thereby creating better data for climate impact research and flood protection.

► Guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI in research developed

The Commission and stakeholders have developed a set of guidelines to support the European researchers in their responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). As examples, it is recommended that AI systems do not get authorship, to always mention the kind of generative AI in the method section and to always reflect their results critically.

► The Society for the History of Building Technology met in Braunschweig

Under the motto “Maintain. Reactivate. Save”, the Society for the History of Building Technology (Gesellschaft für Bautechnikgeschichte) conference took place at the invitation of TU Braunschweig and the City of Braunschweig. The goal of resource-efficient reuse instead of demolition and new construction was supported by numerous presentations.

► New website provides an overview of thematic module packages in English

Potential exchange students who are wondering whether they can study 30 ECTS in English at TU Braunschweig in one semester can now get an overview of thematic module packages in English: A new website lists corresponding offers and is therefore an important support for prospective international students.

► Virtual Coffee talk on DFG funding

Join Research Services for our monthly Digital Coffee talk on DFG Programmes. Whether you are developing project ideas, planning a DFG proposal, already working on a project or simply want to learn more about individual and collaborative DFG programmes – here you can find answers, suggestions and peer exchange. First virtual meeting: 3 June.

► Closing event for the exhibition “Ausgehoben”

On 8 June, the exhibition “Ausgehoben! Realism from Aristide Maillol to the ZEBRA Group. The Straßner Collection of Technische Universität Braunschweig” at the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig (Haus am Löwenwall) comes to an end. The closing event will feature a piano concert by Braunschweig pianist Juan Peñalver Madrid. Admission is free.

► Second place in the LIFT-OFF start-up competition

Prof. Andreas Dietzel, Victor Krajka and Bo Tang from the Institute of Microtechnology, and Prof. Stephan Reichl from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, took second place in the “Science” category at the University of Göttingen’s LIFT-OFF competition. Their innovative approach is a smart cell sensor that measures the influence of active substances on cells in real time without affecting them.

► Our roughly 400 darlings of the week

… showed great perseverance and good spirits, proving that you can enjoy running even in the rain. On 25 May, they all took part in the 15th Campus Run, completing either the 5-kilometre fun run or the 10-kilometre main run across the university campus. Congratulations to everyone who completed one of the two routes!
