TU Braunschweig submits follow-up applications for two clusters of excellence

Since 2019, the two research projects SE²A – Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation and QuantumFrontiers at TU Braunschweig have been funded as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German state and federal governments. On 22 August, both clusters submitted follow-up applications to secure continued funding for another seven years. We keep our fingers crossed!

 Contaminated industrial sites in the permafrost

During their expedition to the Canadian Arctic, Professor Antje Schwalb and PhD student Emma Cameron from the Institute of Geosystems and Bioindication are investigating the dangers of contaminated industrial sites in the permafrost. In the Mackenzie Delta, they are examining the impact of climate change and potential drilling fluid spills on local water ecosystems.

Gender asterisks: Less understandable in the singular than in the plural?

Does it make a difference whether the gender asterisk is used in the singular or the plural? The Institute of Educational Psychology investigated this in two experiments.

Barefoot through Wittenberge

An exhibition about the streets and pavements of the town of Wittenberge opens at the Wittenberge City Museum in September – with a barefoot trail, stories and historical views. The exhibition has been supported by students from the Braunschweig Pavement Engineering Centre.

US students at the Institute of Plant Biology

Three students from the USA report on their research stay at the Institute of Plant Biology with Prof. Boas Pucker. They are investigating the genome of the cacao plant and the tropical potato manioc.

More workshops on the sustainability strategy

Workshops will also be offered in September to further develop the recently adopted sustainability strategy. On 3 September, the focus will be on energy efficiency and sufficiency and how energy and resource consumption can be optimised at TU. On 17 September, the focus will be on campus design and the campus as a real-world laboratory for sustainability. All interested TU members are cordially invited.

Host organisations are invited to apply to the MSCA4Ukraine scheme for fellowships to host displaced researchers from Ukraine. If you have any questions, please contact Astrid Sebastian.

CESAER Annual Meetings 2024, hosted by the University of Strathclyde, will feature an Images of Research: Challenging images of science, designed by researchers, are intended to encourage viewers to learn more about research and its impact. Interested researchers are invited to submit their contributions till 10 September.

Annual conference of the GAIN24

TU Braunschweig participates in the annual conference of the German Academic International Network (GAIN24) in San Francisco, presents current offers at the Talent Fair and offers a workshop on Female Career Advancement – from Equal Opportunities to Diversity in STEM.

… are all those who have worked hard on the follow-up applications for excellence funding over the past weeks and months. Many thanks to all of them! We are keeping our fingers crossed that this hard work will pay off and wish everyone a good rest.

► Guess what! – Resolution from 16 August

Answer b) is correct. In the winter semester 2023/24, TU students came from 112 different countries (including Germany). By far the most international students came from China, followed by Syria and India.
