Actively living democracy Call by the Executive Board of TU Braunschweig
Research-intensive universities like TU Braunschweig thrive on the freedom of science and an open-minded exchange, both internally and externally. As the centre of a dynamic scientific ecosystem, TU Braunschweig draws its strength from a close-knit network of high-calibre research partners and social actors – in the region, nationally and internationally.
Democratic principles must continue to apply, especially in the current heated political climate in Germany, in order to avert a threat to science, research and education – precisely those areas that will make decisive contributions in the future to making our society fit for the future. TU Braunschweig stands for a respectful culture of debate, the ability to reach a consensus and the clear distinction between true and false.
In this situation, the upcoming federal elections will be a decision about the future direction of our democracy. With regard to the basic values of TU Braunschweig, the Executive Board is advocating broad participation in the Bundestag elections and, under the motto “Actively living democracy”, fully supports the call of the German Rectors’ Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz – HRK), the German Student Union (Deutsches Studentenwerk – DSW), and the Free Student Union (freier zusammenschluss von student*innenschaften – fzs): “The HRK, DSW, and Fzs jointly call on all members of higher education institutions – research, teaching, technology, and administration staff, as well as students – to exercise their right to vote on 23 February.”
