► Generating electricity with cardio fitness
TU members can not only work on their own fitness at the University Sports Centre on Beethovenstrasse, but can also use innovative cardio machines to generate their own electricity, which is then fed into the university’s power grid. An app allows users to track their own power production and start challenges.
► TU Braunschweig expands its network in India
As part of a delegation of German university leaders organised by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), TU President Angela Ittel visited India last week. She also used the trip to strengthen the partnership between TU Braunschweig and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay).
► Healthy urban trees despite heat and concrete
In times of increasing drought and rising temperatures, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from our university and the Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) is investigating how climate, soil sealing and water availability affect urban trees in the “CliMax” project. They have studied three tree species at a total of nine sites in Braunschweig.
► Marie S. Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship for Mariachiara Gallia
Dr Mariachiara Gallia has been awarded a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship by the European Commission. The senior scientist at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics is researching icing on aircraft. Many congratulations!
► Braunschweig start-up wins two competitions
Liontech Instruments, a spin-off of the Institute for Communications Technology, has won awards in the nationwide business plan competition start2grow and in the BMWK’s “Start-up Competition – Digital Innovations”. The start-up, funded by the EXIST start-up grant, develops hardware-based malware protection.
► Libraries Night at the University Library
On 4 April, the Night of the Libraries will take place under the motto “Know. Share. Discover”. Whether it’s a book flea market, a bookbinding workshop, a pharmacy quiz or a guided tour – the University Library offers a full programme from 6pm to 10pm.
► Travelling exhibition “Picturing the Unimaginable”, Campus Nord
From 1 April until 15 July, Camp Westerbork Memorial Centre will exhibit a travelling exhibition at the library on TU Campus Nord. The exhibition shares the stories, artists and development process of the graphic novel “Picturing the Unimaginable” which depicts ten stories about the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes. The exhibition will be accompanied by a hybrid course offered at the department of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (Institute of English and American Studies).
► German Research Fair
The DAAD office in Tokyo and the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) at the same location invite to an annual “German Research Fair” on 10 April for Japanese doctoral candidates and postdocs who would like to find out about research and funding opportunities.
► “Führen mit Kurs” programme: successful completion
On 14 March, the final session of the ZPE programme “Führen mit Kurs” took place. The twelve participants discussed their experiences of the programme and the topic of leadership with HVP Dietmar Smyrek.
► Submissions for INTERXR final conference
On 25 and 26 September, the final conference of the project “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Extended Realities in Education” (INTERXR) will take place. The results of the project will be presented and the potential for research and teaching will be discussed. Posters/presentations (in English) and technology presentations can be submitted here until 15 April.
► Hito Steyerl exhibition in the Science Showcase
A special highlight of the Arts and Science Lab in the Science Showcase at Waisenhausdamm 8 is the installation by renowned artist Hito Steyerl, which can be seen from 28 March to 31 May.
► WindEurope 2025 with Leichtweiß-Institute
As part of WindEurope 2025 in Copenhagen, the EU-funded INF4INiTY project, coordinated by the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, is organising an event on ‘Critical Technologies for Future Offshore Wind’. On 9 April, scientists will present innovative solutions for the design of the next generation of floating wind farms.
► Wollbau and Constructive Disobedience
In a double book launch, Professor Folke Köbberling and Professor Helga Blocksdorf will present ‘Wollbau. Wool – an underestimated resource’ and “Constructive Disobedience”. The discussion will focus on architecture-related art, courage and disobedience, scarcity of resources and experimental methods.
► Reminder: Presidential Lecture with Prof. Ina Schaefer
On 3 April, Prof. Ina Schaefer will speak at the Haus der Wissenschaft about the challenges of introducing autonomous vehicles. She will present a concept that could help to advance their introduction.
► Our darlings of the week
… are all the international students who are once again attending our university in large numbers during the summer semester. It all starts on 31 March with the Welcome Week. By the way: there is now a special broadcast channel on Instagram where international students can network and ask questions. A warm welcome to TU Braunschweig!
