QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence once again recognised in Excellence Strategy

Of the two TU Clusters of Excellence, QuantumFrontiers is entering the next phase of the Excellence Strategy. Through its two research projects, SE2A and QuantumFrontiers, the TU has established itself as a leading research location in nanotechnology, quantum physics and sustainable aviation. The clusters’ work forms a strong foundation for the “Ecoversity”.

Storm surge in the Large Wave Current Flume

At the Coastal Research Centre’s Large Wave Current Flume (GWK+), the Leichtweiβ Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources investigated the influence of dune grass on the resistance of coastal dunes. To this end, a storm surge scenario and vegetated dunes were realistically simulated.

Measuring quantum chips

But how can quantum technologies actually be measured? Technische Universität Braunschweig and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) are conducting joint research into precisely these limits of measurability, for example within the QuantumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence. Now, with “HIQEQS”, the two project partners are embarking on a German-Dutch collaboration with five other partners to develop a new measurement concept.

Into the future without air friction

Researchers Lajos Fohlmeister, Hendrik Traub and Jan Kube have succeeded in improving the aerodynamic efficiency of aircraft wings. They achieved this by using specially developed, 3D-printed suction panels to stabilise and optimise the boundary layer – the area of airflow immediately adjacent to the wing – in a targeted manner.

CampusXperience: What to expect at the kick-off on 20 June

CampusXperience will kick off on 20 June at 7.30pm with a Science Slam in the Audimax, in collaboration with the House of Science. Six researchers from TU  and its ecosystem have been invited to present their projects in entertaining, short lectures and inspire the audience with their research topics. The first 50 guests will receive a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. Get your tickets here.

University Future Festival 2025

At the Future Tech Stage of the TU Braunschweig at the University Future Festival (U:FF) 2025, future technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and quantum computing – and their use in higher education – were debated.

Inaugural lectures

Professors of the Faculty of of Humanities and Education will give their inaugural lectures on 28 May: Prof. Katrin Vorhölter about “Mathematik individuell, kreativ und selbstständig betreiben – Mathematik für die Generation Zukunft” and Prof. Alexander Büssing about “Digitale Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung in einem reflexiven Biologieunterricht” in lecture hall HB1.1, Botanical Garden.

►TU Teaching Award 2025: Nomination phase begins

This year, the TU Teaching Awards will be presented for the second time. All students can submit their nominations via Stud.IP until 22 June. Further information on the nomination process  can be found here.

► “Working together to combat loneliness in Braunschweig”

On 4 June at 9 a.m., a “Zukunftswerkstatt” workshop on this topic will take place in the Science Showcase. Participants will develop ideas to be turned into concrete student projects that address the social issue of loneliness. These projects can then be implemented via the Sandkasten platform. To register, please email c.stascheit@tu-braunschweig.de.

Travel expense support for visits to TU Braunschweig’s strategic partners

Research Services support travel expenses for tenure-track professors who would like to carry out a short-term research stay at one of TU Braunschweig’s four international partner universities.

► Tip for the weekend: Plant and book market in the Botanical Garden

On Sunday 25 May, the Botanical Garden’s plant market offers a unique opportunity to purchase special plant species. There will also be a book flea market in the Orangery.

UCL TALKS series: Naomi Hanakata – Planetary Reverberations

In her lecture on 27 May, Naomi C. Hanakata (National University of Singapore) will demonstrate how the production of renewable energy is reconfiguring territorial relations in Southeast Asia, and how sustainability transitions are reshaping concentrated and extended forms of urbanisation. The lecture will be held in English, admission is free.

► What does meeting crafting have to do with teaching?

In the next Knowledge Nugget on 28 May at 2.30pm, Dr Marie Ritter and Darien Tartler will demonstrate how to run successful meetings and explain how this can inform teaching. Register via Academic Cloud Hub or by emailing info@co3learn.de.
