► Student House finalist for European Architecture Prize

Will the rain of prizes continue? Our student house is the only German entry among the seven European finalists for the Mies van der Rohe Award for Contemporary Architecture. It will remain exciting until the winners are announced on April 25!

► Wanted: Photos and videos of the Christmas floods

Images of water levels and flooding can help the Department of Hydrology and River Basin Management at the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources to improve flood forecasting. The scientists are therefore asking for photos, videos and drone footage of the “Christmas floods” in the Aller-Leine-Oker region.

► Biomolecules identified on the nanoscale

Professor Uta Schlickum’s research group at the QuatumFrontiers Cluster of Excellence has succeeded for the first time in identifying an individual amino acid in a peptide. As one of the basic building blocks of life, peptides are found in the body as hormones or antibiotics, for example.

► From the Arctic to the peatlands of Germany

Torsten Sachs has been appointed joint professor for land-atmosphere interactions by our unversity and the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. In our interview, he talks about his research in Arctic permafrost regions and German peatlands. Welcome to TU Braunschweig!

► Battery research: Visit from Canada

On 21 February, a delegation of Canadian industry representatives visited the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB). The exchange meeting is intended to establish contacts that offer both sides benefits in strengthening the respective national battery ecosystems.

►Experimental box for sustainable aviation research

With the hybrid format “changING Regio” in the SE²A Cluster of Excellence, schoolgirls can immerse themselves in the world of sustainable aviation research and awaken their own enthusiasm for technology. The pupils started by experimenting with a microcontroller-operated robot.

► The positive impact is measurable

Hackdays familiarise young people with digital technology and make them more confident. The learning success is measurable. This is the result of the evaluation of the “Make Your School” project by the Institute for Communication Science.

► From ZeBra to the living room

Center of Fire Safety Research, patient room, railway training facility, strip light scanner, living room: the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences has many laboratories, experimental rooms, real laboratories, equipment, rooms and test halls. In a new video series, Faculty 3 presents some of these experimental facilities.

► Unrestricted Right of Appeal

Last week, the Ministry of Science and Culture transferred the unrestricted right of appeal to TU Braunschweig. This comes into force on 1 April, but is subject to statutory revocation. TU Braunschweig has had its own right of appeal since 2015, which has been renewed by the Ministry every three years.

► Volkswagen Foundation Call “Open Up”

Up until 9 April, projects are being sought from research teams from the humanities and cultural sciences with a ‘new departure’ character, which not only offer new perspectives on already known research subjects, but also explore new research areas and topics. Online consultation hours will be offered beforehand.

► Staff Council election

The staff council elections and the elections for the youth and trainee representatives will take place next week. The polling stations in the Forum building and in Mensa Beethovenstraße will be open on 27 February. On 28 February you can vote in the E-Technik building and at the NFL. You can find out who is standing for election for the next four years in the info portal.

► Snowdrops, winter aconites and crocus

… are currently blooming in our botanical garden. But there is also a lot going on elsewhere: we can look forward to the construction of a glass pavilion in the extension section.

► Care clips: Scientific perspectives on the care crisis

For this year’s Equal Care Day in Braunschweig on 29 February, professors Henriette Bertram and Okka Zimmermann will be presenting care clips on the spatial dimension of care work and the fair distribution of care work at 5:30 p.m. in “Roter Saal”, Schlossplatz 1.

►Conference series “GeoMonitoring”

On 29 February and 1 March, the “GeoMonitoring” conference will take place for the 12th time at Campus North. The conference series deals with the geometric monitoring of objects and processes in the Earth system on a local, regional and global level.

► Darling of the week

Our darling of the week Henry Braun put in a masterful performance in the cyclocross race at the German University Championships in Bonn. In a hard-fought final lap on unpaved and muddy paths, the Master’s student of pharmaceutical engineering was able to prevail against Matthias Kollbach from the University of Bonn. Congratulations on the championship title!
