Topics: Frozen at the North Pole + 4 x Top 10 + Participation required!
Editor: Hannah Kreß
► Hydrogen research: Hydrogen Terminal opened
In future, the entire process chain from the production and storage to the utilisation of climate-neutral hydrogen will be researched here. The joint project of the Steinbeis Innovation Centre energieplus and the TU Braunschweig is being funded by the BMBF with over 20 million euros. The test site at the research airport can be visited on 22 June as part of an open day.
► Frozen at the North Pole: Alumni Talk with the head of the MOSAiC expedition
The research vessel “Polarstern” spent a year drifting frozen through the Arctic Ocean on a year-long expedition to investigate the effects of climate change in the Arctic. Climate and polar researcher Professor Markus Rex will talk about his experiences on the largest Arctic mission of all time in the Alumni Talk on 25 June at 18:30.
► New insights into the formation of tiny cloud particles in the Arctic
Scientists from Braunschweig and Leipzig successfully combined two methods to investigate the formation of new particles over Svalbard: measurements were carried out simultaneously using a tethered balloon system and the unmanned TU aircraft ALADINA. These particles can, for example, influence the formation of clouds and thus have an impact on climate change.
► Coastal Protection: Innovation alone is not enough
How coastal communities can protect themselves against natural hazards and extreme events in the long term is the subject of the research project “METAscales”, coordinated by the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources. The scientists want to integrate not only technical but also socio-economic aspects into coastal planning, coastal protection and risk management.
► Inaugural lectures from 2 faculties
There will be two inaugural lectures next week: Prof. Oliver Völkerink, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, will hold his inaugural lecture “Wie kann nachhaltiger Leichtbau für die Mobilität der Zukunft gelingen? Mit Funktionsintegration!“ on 26 June, and Prof. Henriette Bertram, Department Architecture, on 27 June about “Vielfalt erforschen und gestalten: Genderperspektiven auf Technik und die gebaute Umwelt”.
► Art treasure (unearthed)
What does an art collection at TU Braunschweig do? In this interview, art historian Dr Laura Breede gives an insight into the project funded by the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz (Braunschweig Cultural Heritage Foundation) to make the “Straßner Collection“ accessible and visible.
► 4 x Top 10: Graduates optimally prepared for career
The WirtschaftsWoche university ranking attests to TU Braunschweig’s excellent reputation among employers. With industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and business informatics, four degree programmes are ranked in the top 10.
► Resilience in municipal contexts
On 27 June 2024, three lectures of the BeLIFE project (Department of Psychology of Socio-Technical Systems) will take place in the Haus der Wissenschaft from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon. Prof. Dr Lars Gerhold, Prof. Dr Wolfgang Sunder and Prof. Dr Alexander Stolz will discuss psychological, social, infrastructural and technical resilience and its significance for current and future challenges in civil security.
► Launch of the International Summer School for German Language and Culture
Welcome to Braunschweig! 30 students from all over the world are participating in this year’s first International Summer School for German Language and Culture which started on Monday. Over the next 6 weeks, they will not only improve their German language skills, but also get to know Braunschweig and the region.
► Application phase for the DaF/DaZ study programme for the winter semester 2024/2025
The next application phase for the DaF/DaZ study programme for the winter semester 2024/2025 runs from 24.06. to 07.07. The DaF/DaZ study programme is open not only to students, but also to doctoral students and employees of TU Braunschweig. An online information event on 24 June 2024 from 09:30 a.m. offers the opportunity to ask questions.
► Thematic competition for biologisation in ERDF
The MWK is calling for innovative projects on biologisation as part of ERDF funding to be submitted by 2 October 2024. They are looking for application-orientated approaches that use bio-based methods to make processes and products more efficient, sustainable and climate-neutral. Projects from the fields of life sciences, agriculture and food industry, new materials, production technology and digital economy are particularly in demand. If you are interested in submitting an application, please contact the Research Service.
► Practical insights into flying
20 participants in the “step in MINT” programme explored the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion and Turbomachinery (IFAS) and the Institute of Fluid Mechanics (ISM) in wind tunnel experiments and by examining engine blades.
► Participation required!
The final week of the employee survey on working conditions and health is coming up. Take part until 01.07.2024!
► From the legendary currywurst to the buffet
For 22 years, Sabine Maurer, the tenant of the staff canteen, cooked and baked for the employees of TU Braunschweig. On 20 June, she opened the doors of the social and meeting room in the old building for the last time. As a farewell gift, there was a large bouquet of flowers with a heartfelt thank you and best wishes for the future.
► Darling of the week
Diversity Days, Health Week, Social Impact Festival, TUmorrow Days – there was a lot going on on campus over the past few weeks. Our darlings of the week are all the organisers, participants and supporters who have made these events so unique. A big thank you! But there’s more: at “Summer Vibes X Campusnord” on 22 June, the North Campus will become a festival site. With live music, science and activities such as spikeball.
