► New Higher Education Development Agreement
On 12 March, the new Higher Education Development Agreement between the state of Lower Saxony and the Lower Saxony universities, including our TU Braunschweig, was signed. Particularly notable about this agreement is that it provides universities with more autonomy in areas such as the design of study programs and financial planning security. Among other things, future pay scale increases in the personnel sector will be covered by the state.
► New transfer strategy and Tranfserservice
The Senate of TU Braunschweig passed the new transfer strategy on 13 March. The strategy’s focus is on the Transfer and Innovation Ecosystems (TIES), which aim to foster active participation in shaping societal transformation processes. More details about the transfer strategy will soon be available from the Transfer Service Office (formerly known as the Transfer and Cooperation House) here.
► HIT with new formats
At the University Information Day (HIT – Hochschulinformationstag) on 24 May, prospective students will have the opportunity to get a taste of university life with a varied programme. New this year are the formats “Meet the Faculty” and “Meet the TU”, where visitors get to know the individual faculties and (service) facilities of the TU better. Registrations are possible from 1 April.
► How is Braunschweig tackling climate change?
As part of the “Co-Adapted Braunschweig” project, a package of measures will be developed in a multi-stage workshop process together with stakeholders from urban society, administration and science as an important building block on the way to Braunschweig’s climate adaptation strategy. The Institute for Geoecology and the SpACE Lab of the Institute for Sustainable Urban Development are involved.
► Integrated light as a key to future computers
While computer chips are becoming smaller and faster, the combination of electronics and photonics on a single chip remains unresolved. In the OptoGaN project, Braunschweig and Jena are cooperate on optoelectronic components that could be used in quantum computers, for example.
► Tumour cells reprogram the immune system
Despite modern immunotherapies and existing drugs, patients with lung cancer often develop resistance to treatment. To close this gap, an international team led by Prof Thekla Cordes has explored potential targets for therapies. The research results were published in “Cancer Discovery”.
► Honorary professorship for Dr Arne Seitz
Dr Arne Seitz was appointed honorary professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on 6 March. In doing so, the Faculty is honouring his outstanding expertise in the field of aviation, in particular in aerofoil aerodynamics, as a scientist and expert advisor for the SE²A Cluster of Excellence.
► Farewell symposium for Dr. Sabine Marx
A symposium on “Perspectives for Higher Education Didactics” was recently held to mark the retirement of Dr Sabine Marx, the long-standing director of the Center of Excellence in Lower Saxon Higher Education (CELSHE). From 1 April, Volker Voigt will take over the management of the KHN.
► Recruiting international researchers
The Research Service has produced a handout “Researchers Recruit Researchers” on the recruitment of international researchers. It contains information on bilingual job advertisements and external recruiting formats, etc.
► NFL prizes to be awarded
Nominations for the Hermann-Blenk-Forscherpreis, the Karl-Doetsch-Nachwuchspreis and the VDI Luft- und Raumfahrt-Preis can be submitted by 16 May by email to nfl@tu-braunschweig.de. Each NFL institute may submit one proposal for the Hermann-Blenk-Forscherpreis and one for the young scientist awards. Also new: Bachelor theses are also eligible for the young scientist awards.
► Community Café “Social Innovation“
As part of the tu4society project, the Knowledge Transfer team will be holding the Community Café “Social Innovation” on 20 March at 1 pm in the 4Lab (Sandkasten-Zentrale). Sarah Brauns, founder and CEO of Heart Job, will talk about her start-up project, which aims to bring companies and talents together for greater job satisfaction and potential development.
► Take note if you are interested in podcast productions!
There are three courses in the staff training programme on this topic with different focuses – from recording in the recording studio to post-production. Registration is now open via StudIP. There is also a new room on the topic of “podcasts” in the matrix chat, which is intended to serve as a dialogue platform for podcasters.
► Darling of the week
Our favourite of the week has deservedly won the 2023 Heinrich Büssing Prize with his dissertation. Dr Alexander Henkes developed AI-based methods that greatly accelerate highly intensive calculations. This means that complex simulations can be carried out up to 1800 times faster, allowing planned lightweight components to be tested much faster and with fewer resources in future.
► Events
Even during the lecture-free period, there is still plenty going on at TU Braunschweig. Lectures, discussions, information events, concerts and much more. Take a look at our calendar of events and get inspired.
