► Next-generation space debris model

The TU spin-off OKAPI:Orbits, together with the Institute of Space Systems, will develop the next version of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) reference model of the space debris environment. The goals are to improve collision risk assessment and to ensure safer and more sustainable space operations.

► Hydrogen research: “Close collaboration in the scientific ecosystem”

TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer IST are conducting joint research at the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter. Together with regional companies, new hydrogen technologies are being developed here. Professor Sabrina Zellmer reports on the goals of the accompanying research.

► AI in microscopy

An interdisciplinary research group at TU Braunschweig has developed an artificial intelligence that characterises images from scanning tunnelling microscopes with 99% accuracy. This more efficient analysis will speed up processes in basic research at the LENA research centre and the QuantumFrontiers cluster of excellence.

► Using modern technologies for climate-friendly aviation and aerospace

Professor Kai Richter was appointed to TU Braunschweig in a joint appointment procedure with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He is concerned with the influence of aerodynamics on aircraft and spacecraft and how aeroplanes, helicopters and rocket systems can be significantly more environmentally friendly in the future. Welcome!

► Measuring particulate matter by bicycle

Air pollution is harmful to our health. To make this pollution visible, Merle Riecke, a graduate in environmental engineering, developed the OpenBikeSensor with a particulate matter sensor as part of her master’s thesis at the Institute for Transport, Railway Construction and Operation (IVE). The data could help cities and communities identify air pollution hotspots and take action.

► Climate adaptation: creative project ideas wanted

How can Braunschweig better adapt to the consequences of climate change? The City of Braunschweig, together with the Institute for Sustainable Urbanism, is calling for creative project ideas that can be implemented quickly to be submitted to the “Co-Adapted Braunschweig” project by 12 March.

► Promoting international teaching together

On 18 February at 10:30 a.m. the public event “Meet SAiL: Good Practices in International Teaching at TU Braunschweig” will take place in the International Teaching Lab of the Project House. Teaching projects that have already been funded by the SAiL funding programme will be presented, along with a wide range of ideas for the (further) development of international teaching at TU Braunschweig.

► Open Up – New Research Spaces for the Humanities and Cultural Studies

The Volkswagen Foundation’s call for proposals is aimed at project teams of two or three researchers from the humanities and cultural sciences who would like to work together to explore new and innovative research areas. The deadline for applications: 3 April. Online consultation hours for further information will take place on 21 and 28 February from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

On 27 February, anyone interested can learn about the possibilities of social reading for university teaching in a 45-minute workshop (registration required). The event is organised by Co3Learn, a joint project of the Universities of Braunschweig, Göttingen and Hannover.

► Research in Dialogue with Researcher in Residence Makalay Saidiatu Sonda

The BMBF-funded project “Gender Dimensions in STEM Research” (GeDiMINT) at TU Braunschweig continues the series “Research in Dialogue”. On 5 March at 4 p.m. Makalay Saidiatu Sonda (Njala University, Sierra Leone) will give a lecture on “Gender-based Violence and Politics Online: the Realities of Sierra Leone”. She is currently a Researcher in Residence with Professor Henriette Bertram’s Gender.Ing team.

► Workshops on professional personnel selection in science and administration

The Professional and Personnel Development invites staff responsible for human resources to two workshops. On 25 March: “How do I find the right talent? Professional and diversity-sensitive personnel selection in science and administration”, on 26 May: “Appealing to women and men equally formulating gender-fair job advertisements”.
