► Bringing quantum technology into application more quickly
The QVLS-iLabs future cluster is entering its second phase with €15 million in funding. Together with €8 million in own funds, €23 million will be available over the next three years to accelerate the transfer of state-of-the-art quantum technologies to the market.
► LED technology optimises building inspection
In the “TotalScope” project, our university is working with industry partners to develop LED-based measuring devices. These are designed to monitor the condition of bridges, dams and buildings accurately, cost-effectively and in real time. The aim is to make building inspection more efficient and detect damage at an early stage.
► Art meets science
The state of Lower Saxony is providing around three million euros in funding for “Grounding the Human: Lower Saxony”, a project run by the Science and Art Lab at the Project House. The aim is to bring researchers together with international artists and develop new ideas for healthy, sustainable living in urban and rural areas.
► Inaugural lecture
Prof. Kai Richter, Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, German Aerospace Center (DLR), will hold his inaugural lecture “Aerodynamische Technologien für energieeffiziente Flugzeuge von morgen” on 11 February.
► Awards from the Lower Saxony Chamber of Engineers Foundation
Two awards for final theses were given to our university by the foundation. Dr Sebastian Kantorski received an award for his doctoral thesis in transport engineering and Charlotta Reckleben received an award for her master’s thesis in civil engineering. Congratulations!
► Prof. Sarah Rachut as an expert in the German Bundestag
The Data Governance Act is intended to enable the implementation of the EU Data Governance Act in Germany and thereby promote data use. Prof. Sarah Rachut from the Institute of Law contributed her expertise as an expert in the Committee for Digital Affairs and State Modernisation.
► Invitation: A decade of GradTUBS!
Our Graduate Academy GradTUBS has become the central point of contact for doctoral students at our university and also at the University of Fine Arts – for soft skills and career-relevant know-how. On 13 February, it will celebrate its anniversary in style in the auditorium of the Haus der Wissenschaft. You are welcome to come along!
► Sustainable strategies for more stable embankments
… are being developed by Chinese researcher Dr Xianlei Fu at the Institute of Geomechanics and Geotechnics and the Institute of Geoecology. Until the end of 2027, the Humboldt postdoctoral researcher will be supervised by Prof. Marius Milatz and Prof. Magdalena Sut-Lohmann.
► Architecture students sweep the board at the Laves Prize
No fewer than seven projects from the Department of Architecture were honoured by the Laves Foundation in Hanover. The first two prizes also went to students from our university – Laura Leinert and Milena Marie-Antoinette Nitsche. Congratulations!
► Neural Art Contest
During the “Advanced Practicum Data Science” at the Institute of Analysis and Algebra, students used machine learning methods to create exciting images. Which of the 27 images do you like best? Cast your vote now!
► Virtual Lunch Break – International Educational Concepts in the Digital Space
On 12 February, Prof. Eckart Voigts (Institute of English and American Studies) will show how collaborative and intercultural online teaching can succeed at the interface between the humanities and natural sciences – and what potential digital international learning spaces offer.
► Information session on Lower Saxony Day
If you have any questions about Lower Saxony Day, you can discuss them directly at an online information event hosted by the Ecoversity Hub on 10 February from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
► Compact German courses during the non-lecture period
Registration for the Language Centre’s compact German courses begins on 9 February at 10 a.m. Employees can also participate and improve their German language skills.
► Call for tender (CFT): Award for the best research environment 2026
“Die Junge Akademie” and the VW Foundation are awarding €10,000 each to five research teams that enable excellent scientific work through good team culture, support for individual strengths and collaborative work. The application deadline is 1 March.
► New funding programme from the Gerda Henkel Foundation: “Prospect Utopia”
Postdoctoral researchers who are conducting research on the interpretation and shaping of the future are eligible to apply. A total of 50 projects will be funded with up to €50,000 each. The application deadline is 15 April.
► Our darlings of the week…
are making a real mark: thanks to the Germany Scholarship, students at our university can concentrate fully on their studies while also building valuable networks. Congratulations to all 126 scholarship recipients! Among them is business informatics student Ahmad Iqbal from Malaysia. He will also receive the DAAD Prize 2025 as the best international student at our university. Hats off and congratulations!
