Parliamentary Evening in Berlin presented research “Made in Braunschweig”

What will mobility look like in the future? What does this change mean for society and the world of work? These were the questions addressed at a Parliamentary Evening hosted by the City of Braunschweig, TU Braunschweig and other research institutions on 30 November at the Representation of the State of Lower Saxony.

► From the Nibelungen to Indiana Jones

Andrea Schindler is new Professor of German Medieval Studies at the Institute of German Studies. As an expert in medieval German language and literature, she researches the roots of our language and the timeless popularity of stories such as the Nibelungen. A warm welcome!

► Panel Discussion Antisemitism – Hostility towards Science

Anti-Semitism has been an explosive topic not only since recent events. The conspiracy narratives of the “Corona protests” also made it clear how widespread anti-Semitic beliefs are and how dangerous they can be for freedom – including the freedom of research. Prof. Melanie Brinkmann, Dr. Friederike Hendriks, Dr. Felix Klein and Dr. Dirk Sadowski will discuss this on 18 January.

► On the way to the (almost) perfect material cycle

Scientists at the Institute of Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering are researching a new recycling process. The aim of this process is to return PET to its original materials. This could close the material cycle almost completely and give plastic waste a new value as a raw material.

► Fire tests for more security

Our picture of the month gives an insight into research at the Zebra Center of Fire Safety Research. It focuses on a fire test involving timber structures and insulation materials made from renewable resources.

► Metaphors in science

The use of metaphors is essential to describe abstract and non-physical phenomena. In the future, an interdisciplinary network will research how metaphors affect the life sciences and science communication.

► A special anniversary …

… is being celebrated by the TU Braunschweig Language Center this year. 50 years ago, a coordinated language course programme was offered at TU Braunschweig for the first time. Celebrations will take place with an anniversary event on 26 April, 2024

► Between two countries

In 2007, TU psychology graduate Carolin Ritter immigrated to New Zealand. Since the summer, she has been back at the Institute of Psychology on parental leave. In this interview, she talks about her work in two countries and explains why there are sometimes more than 1,000 students on her courses in New Zealand.

► Georg Kerschensteiner award for Professor Rainer Müller
Professor Rainer Müller has been awarded the Georg Kerschensteiner Prize by the German Physical Society for his outstanding achievements in teaching physics. Our warmest congratulations!

► Ph.D. award from the International Academy of Wood Science
Dr. Juan Li, Fraunhofer WKI, has been awarded for outstanding research achievements in the field of wood and fiber science and technology for her dissertation at the TU Research Training Group 2075. Congratulations!

► “Forschungsdatenmanagement Niedersachsen” launched

The MWK is providing 15.7 million euros to support the development of the initiative, which contributes to the security, traceability and quality of academic work. Our Head of the University Library and spokesperson for the working group, Robert Strötgen, is significantly involved.

Inaugural lectures from three faculties

There will be six inaugural lectures next week: Prof. Andres Gomez and Prof. Vadim Issakov, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Physics, will hold their inaugural lectures on 5 December, Prof. Elisabeth Endres, Department Architecture, on 6 December and Prof. Markus Ludwig, Prof. Anne Paschke and Prof. Felix Rösel, Department Business Science, on 7 December.

Online-event for teaching staff

As part of the event series “Erfolgreich studieren”, the online event “Early warning system & other practical measures to support student success” will take place on 12 December at 10:30 am. Two TU Dresden projects will be presented. To the registration.

Visiting students from Ecuador

Supported by the DAAD, students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Escuela Poltécnica Nacional in Quito visited TU Braunschweig. They got to know several research teams, laboratories and research areas of the institutes and gained an insight into research and studies.

Fulbright-Cottrell Award

Young German scientists from the fields of chemistry, physics and astronomy with teaching activities at Bachelor’s and Master’s level can apply for the Fulbright-Cottrell Award until 29 January 2024.

► Two Schering Stiftung awards announced for 2024

The Ernst Schering Prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, is aimed at scientists in the field of basic biomedical research. The Friedmund Neumann Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros. It honors young scientists in the field of basic research in human biology, organic chemistry or human medicine.

► Please note parking lot closures

Parking lots in the TU area are regularly closed for maintenance or repair purposes. The closures are announced on notices in the parking lot and via the information portal. To avoid being towed away, please keep these parking spaces free.

► Darling of the week

“Oh Christmas tree…”. Right in time for the first snow, a Christmas tree has been erected on University Square. A visit to the University Library will also allow you to admire the traditional book tree. We wish you a good start to the Advent/winter season!
