► Extracting water from moon dust
The extraction of water in space is of immense importance for research into the solar system. Under the direction of DLR Bremen, the LUWEX research project has developed a method for this purpose that has now been successfully tested on a large scale at the TU’s Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics in an experimental phase lasting several months.
► Start of third term for full-time Vice President
On 1 November, full-time Vice President for Human Resources, Finance and Infrastructure Dietmar Smyrek began his third term. He has already been confirmed by the Senate and appointed by the MWK for another eight years in June 2023. Smyrek has been a member of the Presidential Board in this capacity since 2010.
► Coastal protection between Germany and Singapore
With a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Dr Pearl Li Yuzhu from the National University of Singapore is conducting research at the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources. Together with Prof. Nils Goseberg’s team, she will investigate the influence of oyster reefs on waves and currents, as well as soil liquefaction around wind turbines.
► Central Administration: Mission Statement and Strategy
The mission statement and the key points of the Central Administration’s strategy based on it have been revised and updated. The strategy points describe long-term development activities and provide a secure framework for day-to-day work, help improve support for core processes and form the basis for annual target agreements.
► Picture of the month: Light, Sound, Dance and Quantum Physics
In our picture of the month November, we see how artists Niels Weijer and Mike O’Connor took an unusual approach to entering this world during the ‘Highlights of Physics 2024’, which took place in Hannover and Braunschweig in September. Instead of microscopes and interferometers, they used light, music and dance to enter the quantum realm.
► Media Lab starts operations
On 11 November the Media Lab at TU Braunschweig will be officially opened. Interested parties are welcome to visit the lab in the old main building. In addition, the “Focus KO Toolbox” and “Focus Medientechnik” events invite you to try out the technologies and devices during the opening week.
► What influences the success of founders
On 29 October, Dr Michael Fröhlich from the Technical University of Munich was awarded the Stöbich Entrepreneurship Doctoral Prize 2024 for his dissertation. In it, he investigates the effect of university entrepreneurship programmes on the start-up activities of participants. Congratulations to him!
► First Job Expo organised by Alumni-Bau
On 25 October, the Alumni-Bau association invited representatives from companies, large corporations, engineering firms and authorities – all alumni of our university – to the Job Expo in the Architecture Pavilion. Students were able to exchange ideas with companies in panel discussions and one-on-one meetings.
► Long Night of Museums in Munich with the AMC
As part of the 25th anniversary of the Long Night of Museums in Munich, the Collaborative Research Centre “Additive Manufacturing in Construction” (AMC) offered insights into the future of construction in workshops and live demonstrations. For example, small clay houses were printed.
► New DAAD call for proposals launched
The DAAD has released its third call for proposals for 2024 in October: 13 attractive funding programmes offer university members the opportunity to initiate and expand exciting international projects in study, research, teaching, and administration.
► Strengthening and expanding international teaching (SAiL)
As of September, a further seven teaching projects have received funding from the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre as part of the ProDiGI funding programme. The International Teaching Lab of the Project House is delighted with the successful kick-off of the funding round and the great commitment to the expansion of international teaching!
► Efficiency in construction with high safety requirements
Professor Tanja Kessel, TU Institute for Infrastructure and Real Estate Management, took part in a panel discussion at the OECD’s Resilience Days, where she discussed the topic of “Defence Procurement – Procurement in Defence Construction” with leading experts.
► The transformation of the North Frisian coastal landscape
… is being researched by Daniel Jankowski, a PhD student at the Institute of History. In the magazine of the Lower Saxony Center for Climate Research, he presents his project and explains the various motives behind the transformation of coastal landscapes.
► Lower Saxony Data Days 2024
… is the invitation from the State Initiative Research Data Management Lower Saxony on 13 November in Hannover and on 14 November online. In addition to free lectures and workshops on topics such as organising the research process and securing and reusing data, there will also be time for networking.
► Producing Your Own Podcasts – Studio Recording & Post-Production
On 19. November and 4. Dezember there will be two staff training sessions on the topic of Producing Your Own Podcasts – Recording in the Studio. On 16 January there will be another training on post-production of podcasts.
► A digital bouquet of flowers
…goes from the colleagues at the Institute of Microtechnology to the colleagues in the Open Access Publication Services and Research-Related Services departments of the University Library. “The two library teams provide competent and helpful support in finding the best publication channels and optimal publication funding, and are valuable contacts for scientists,” says the institute, which we are happy to agree with!
► Darling of the week
“11 Golden Rules of Information Security”, “The 4×4 Most Important IT Security Mistakes”, “Email Threats and How to Defend Against Them”, “IT Security in the Home Office”, “Tips for Handling Personal Data”. Our darlings of the week are our colleagues in IT Security, who, together with other universities, are organising the IT Security Awareness Days from 4 to 15 November, helping us to avoid falling into cyber traps wherever possible.
