► Community Advent Singing
President Angela Ittel and the Choir of TU Braunschweig invite all employees and students to join the Advent singing on Thursday, 08 December 12:00 at the University Square. The setlist includes popular songs like “We wish you a merry Christmas”, “Oh Tannenbaum”, “Schneeflöckchen, Weissröckchen” and “Deck the halls”. Download the lyrics in advance, come over and sing along!
► Storing energy by converting it into green hydrogen
Surplus energy from renewable energy sources can be converted into hydrogen and stored via efficient electrolysis. Together with Kyoto University, the TU Braunschweig is researching the optimisation of electrodes, which are of central importance in hydrogen production.
► Optimal Air Supply
Hydrogen fuel cells have great potential for sustainable aircraft propulsion. Tim Wittmann at the Institute of Flight Propulsion and Turbomachinery is researching an optimal air supply for fuel cells at high altitudes.
► Research field topological solid-state physics further funded
The Collaborative Research Centre 1143 “Correlated Magnetism: From Frustration to Topology””, in which the Solid-State Theory Division at the Institute for Theoretical Physics is also involved with a subproject, will continue to be supported by the German Research Foundation in a third funding period.
► A warm welcome
Lars Gerhold is setting up the new chair “Psychology of Sociotechnical Systems”. Here, the connection between humans and (digital) technology – such as the acceptance of warning systems – is studied. We asked him what excites him about it and as a policy advisor.
► From engine construction to pharmaceutical application
In creep tests, researchers from the Institute of Materials Science produce nanoporous membranes for potential pharmaceutical applications from nickel-based superalloys. How these membranes look under the microscope is shown in our new picture of the month.
► Role Model: C. Gabriel David
In the next part of the Role Model interview series, Dr. C. Gabriel David, head of the “Future Urban Coastlines” junior research group at the Leichtweiß Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, talks about his experiences as a first-generation academic. Here he explains, besides other things, how detours in his studies helped him to develop his potential.
► Happy anniversary Student Services!
In 1922, todays’ Studentenwerk OstNiedersachsen was founded as an economic office, at that time of Technische Hochschule Braunschweig, and in Clausthal-Zellerfeld as Clausthaler Studentenhilfe. The 100th anniversary has already been duly celebrated this year with various activities. We celebrate as well and look forward to the next 100 years.
► Pilot run of the “Leading with a Course” programme completed
At the closing event on 17 November, President Angela Ittel and Vice President for Human Resources, Finance and Infrastructure Dietmar Smyrek presented the first programme certificates and exchanged views with the 12 successful participants.
► Henriette-Herz-Scouting-Programme
Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation supports high-profile researchers with a right of nomination for Humboldt Research Fellowships. This way, up to three international junior researchers can be recruited for a stay in Germany.
► What is actually …?
The series of video short portraits of 31 degree programmes is finished. In all videos, students give an exciting insight into their studies and report on what makes studying at TU Braunschweig so special. All short portraits can be found in a collected playlist on our YouTube channel and are posted on the study programme pages.
► Habitability
With ecological disasters and fragile geopolitics pushing people and the systems that sustain them to the limits, the question of what it means for the planet to be habitable takes center stage. A lecture series organised by the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture and the City addresses issues of habitability. On 05 December, Nina Krass will talk about “Circular Construction: how we rethink building”.
► Christmas Greetings
The TU Christmas card is available with two designs as a print-ready PDF and as a digital card. In addition, the card can be individually customized in InDesign and PowerPoint for printing.
► Christmas Reading Special
For a reading marathon as part of “One University – One Book”, Prof. Eckart Voigts invites you on 13 December. The video/audio readings of the Braunschweig novel “Leere Herzen” by Juli Zeh will be presented in BI 80.1. There will also be live readings and Christmas snacks and drinks.
► “Wir sind doch alle längst gleichberechtigt!”
The Faculty of Social Work and the Equal Opportunities Office of the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, in cooperation with the Braunschweig Centre for Gender Studies, invite you to a reading with Alexandra Zykunov on 06 December at the Ostfalia in Wolfenbüttel and will be broadcast live in seminar room PK 4.111 at the TU Braunschweig.
► Darling of the week
O book tree, O book tree, how beautiful are your pages – for our darling of the week, we sometimes rearrange well-known Christmas carols. The sparkling, Christmas-decorated book tree in the entrance area of the university library is once again creating a Christmas mood for visitors this Advent season. Anyone looking for a little Christmas distraction should pay it a visit.
