Novel and low-cost approaches for field-based characterization of flow diversity and bed roughness 18.01.2017 | 13:15 Uhr - 14:45 Uhr
One of the main objectives of the European Union’s Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60/EC) is to obtain good ecological conditions in small streams and rivers. Over the last years, there have been numerous initiatives for improving the ecological and chemical quality of (small) streams. However, detailed process-based knowledge of how flow diversity interacts with biogeochemical cycles and organisms, as well as, riverbed and bank roughness is limited. This is mainly due to the limitations in existing field-applicable measurement technology. In this presentation, we present novel, low-cost approaches for quantification of diversity of streams and bed roughness, and illustrate the feasibility of these approaches using low-order stream examples located in the southern Rhineland-Palatinate region.
